The road to Durango is a series of surprises in engineering skill that must challenge the adm.ration of mankinc. As one approaches the Spanish Peabes—perhaps the most beau- tiful and picturesque of all the Rocky Mountain Range—he will see Dump Mountain rising up before him with threatening look. The Sangre de Christe Mountains offer many difficulties to Railroad building, and it was a brave man who did net stop rather than face them, Tt would be useless to attempt a description of the ride over Veta Pass. Writers have exhaust- ed their rhetoric on the subject ; eminent engineers have yoiced their admiration of the scene; the painter has transferred it to canvass ; and he camera has spread it broadcast over the land, but all these efforts fail to convey to the mind of the uninitiated one half of its beanties and grandeur. For tweuty-one miles the train climbs up a grade of 211 feet to the mile, and from the ‘t Mule Shoe,” a curve of thirty-one degrees, the scene ever shifts and varies until the summit is reached at an altitude of 9,350 feet above the level of the sea. Just before the summit is reached, the track is cut into the side of the mountain, from whence there is a descent of 759 feet into the valley of the Veta. From the summit the road rushes down through sey- eral ravines into the fertile valley of San Luis, in the bosom of which lies the un- fortified fort of Fort Garland. From the moment the train reaches the moun- tains, beyond Antovito, it is a series of successful efforts ou the part of the engiaeers to overcome the obstacles placed by nature in their onward path, For miles and miles, the road courses along the brink of the most awiul preci: pices, aud crosses the Pinos-Chama sum- mit at an elevation of 10,000 feet. Along the Cauon of the Pinos, the dis- tance from the track down to the roaring river below,is nearly 1,200 feet. As the train speeds around the sharp curves,

The remarkable fight which occurred recently in the Argyll Free Church in jlasgow is graphically described by a London exchange. It seems that a dis- pute had been going on for some time be- tween the Minister of this Free church and his equally free congregation, and the meeting in question was got up in opposi- tion to his wishes. However, according to our English ceontempcrary, the minister came in, took the chair, but refused to con- stitute the meeting. He then began, some- what incunsistently, to open the meeting with prayer, when a muscular Christian got up and interrupted his pious proceed- ings by seizing him by the throat and at- tempting to cheke him. A general ruction then broke out amongst the assembly, women joining in the affray tooth and nail, The pol'ce were called in and some arrests were made. The representatives of the press, for some unexplained cause, were afterward turned out of the building, so that nobody is able te say what was the end of the row. The individual, however, who caught the minister by the throat was brought up atthe police court and fined three guineas or twenty days’ jail.

There was a garden party a fortnight ago at Marlborough house, given by the Prin- cess of Wales, and among the bidden guests was the Duke.
