The Temperance Movement.
A few days ago the Council and Execu- tive of the Church of England Temperance Soci ty entertained at breakfast, at West minster Town Hall, the Bishops attending the Lambeth Conference. Among those present were the Bishops of Huron, Nia- gara and Toronto. A resolution maintain ing that the importation of spirituous liquors from England and other European countries was having a disastrous eifect upon native races in the Colonies and depen- dencies of the British Empire, and strongly recommending the formation of diocesan branches of the society everywhere, © was unanimously adopted. The remarks of the speakers generally went to show that the dark-skinned races were gradually and rapidly disappearing, not on account of tbe white man’s presence, but through the white man’s sin. It is encouraging, how ever, to have the testimony of some of the foreign Bishops that the English are not by any means the worst offenders among those who carry rum to savage and semi-civilized barbarians.

One may get some idea of what railways mean in the saving of time and money to pas- sengers, by taking the case of London. It is estimated that about 500,000 persons or about one-tenth of the population of the entire area of the metropolis, require to travel to and from their business every day all the year round. If we remember the distances, “it is not too much to assume that the railway will economize for each at least two hours in the week—or, say, five days per annum each. This for 506,000 of people means 2,500,000 days—or an economy of 8,300 years of 300 working days each! Suppose the average earnings of these 500,000 people to be £100 per annum each—not too high an average when We remember the number of millionaires ineluded ‘n the total—we shall seea_ total money saving—in the sense of time being money—of equal to £830,000 per annum. And this in London alone.
