The University of Prince Ed- ward Island -has a plan calling for capital expenditures in exx cess of $20 million over the next 15 years.

THE FIRST FIVE YEARS

There are three five year plans, the first one calling for expenditures of $9 million.

Within this period (1970- 1975) priority will be given to the construction of a new maintenance building, a larger heating plant, and improved sewer facilities.

Included in the proposed five year plan is the construc- tion of a new library, a new Arts and Science Centre, and

another temporary classroom ' building.

MAINTENANCE

\ Maintenance facilities are

now located in Main Building. Main’s electrical system is

inadequate, and quite possibly unsafe. Lack of space is also a problem.

When the present sewer lines were installed the expected ‘maximum load was far below - the capacity of the system. The creation of UPEI (with. the inherent increased enrol- lment) has placed a strain on the system —— as witnessed

by the copious and fragrant discharge from the receptacle

The new library is expected to be completed within eight- teen months, which means it will be ready for occupancy by September 1973 — if pres- ent plans remain unchanged. It will be located between the Duffy Science Centre and the present football field.

ARTS AND SCIENCE CENTRE

The Arts and Science Centre will be built on the present football field. It will contain Classrooms and offices.

The Music and Home Ec- onomics Departments will be using the temporary classroom which will be built before the 1971-72 academic year. These two departments are

sity an extra $30,000 in rent to Holland College.

This temporary facility will include sound-proof glass en- closures for the Music Depart— ment. They will be moveable so that they can be utilized in the new Music or Fine

Arts Building when it is fins

The campus of 1985 will be for people — not machines. Parking is arranged around the campus; students and faculty will walk, not drive, through the campus. A wooded area will be on the northern side of the campus for relaxation, biological studies, and lovers.

RESIDENCES

Although residences are in- cluded in the model shown above, they do not have a high priority. The tendency seems to be to wait and see

what type of residence system is preferred by students (i.e. off-campus, dormitory, co-op, or co-ed.

Student residences can be financed through CMHC mort— gages.

The Plan goes into projected operating costs, enrollment, and specifie locations and cost estimates of the proposed new and remodeled buildings.

The present Student Union Building (the “Barn”) is not shown in the model. It will be torn down. The date for the Barn’s demise has not yet been set. When it does come down, the University will pay a max- imum of $75,000, less deprec-

for the Plan, uniquely named the University Site Planning Committee, was constituted during the past summer. It was chosen by President Baker. Membership included deans, the comptroller, the registrar, the librarian, architects (Alfred Hennessey and a representa- tive of a Toronto based firm). the Student Union President,

and theUniversity President.
