D. Banks McKenzie will lecture in Market Hall this evening, on the life of Father Matthew. This lecture is highly spoken of by the Press of the neighboring Provinces, and will, no doubt, draw a crowded house.

Tur steamer Valetta, Anderson, master, arrived from Montreal this morning, with a cargo of 900 barrels of flour, 26 packages of hardware, 11 packages of stationery, 24 bundles of paper and sundry other mer- chandise.

Are we to believe that the man actually hatches 300 bricks in ten hours ; or where are we to suppose he “lays them about !” The editor of the Patrict requires an inter- preter to explain his paragraphs.

Tue steamer ‘‘Carroll” arrived from Bos ton this morning with a cargo of general merchandize, and the following passengers : Miss Mary 8. Robertson, Emma Bovyer, Sarah Bruce, Annie Bruce, C. C. Legget, Jennie Legget, Mrs. Kate Fennessy, Miss Kate Dwyer, Mrs. Eckstadt, Mrs. Murphy, Miss Annie Cartmill, Mr. D. Cavanagh, Mr. W. Murphy, Mr. Thomas Cavanagh.

YersTERDAY evening two full grown boys engaged in a violent pugilistic encounter on Rotchford Square. Several ‘‘ rounds” were well contested with little damage toeither pugilists. The appearance of the police, caused the seconds to exit without ‘‘throw- ing up the sponge,” and the apparent victor who waited for the umpires decision was arrested. Hewill,no doubt, receive a lawful result from the Magistrate to-morrow morn- ing.

Ririze Practise is being carried on very largely at Kensington by the members of the different Volunteer Companies. The ranges of practice are generally from two hundred to six hundred yards—the highest possible score being one hundred and twenty-five points, On Monday morning last, Pt. A. McKinnon, of No. 2 Co., made 107 points out of a possible score of 125, and on the same day we are informed Pt. James Dover, of No. 6 Co., made 109 points out of the same possible score.

Late in the eve- ening she had occasion to draw water from awell in the vicinity. On hoisting her bucket to the top, she was surprised to find that it contained a small bag. She opened it, and to her astonishment was revealed the carcass of her favorite poodle. A woman who lives in close proximity to the well is suspected for committing the heart- less deed.

Last night, after cleven o'clock, a row occurred in a house of ill fame at the East End of the city, between the proprictoress and anelderly man named Taylor. The shouts of the inmates attracted a large crowd to the place, and the police were sent for. Several times she ordered Taylor to leave the premises, and lastly said if he would not ‘‘ she weuld die for him before morning.” The Police then entered and arrested Taylor. The appearance of the police made quite a change in the temper of the enraged proprietoress; and, throwing her arms around her Mr. T., she begged the

»lice not to take him. It was too late. He was taken.

“The Daily Patriot of Charlottetown, P. E. 1., dated Saturday, June Ist, was read in Shediac same evening to get the latest printed news about the McCarthy affair, happening in that very town,—and they found it.”

The above we clip from this :norning’s Patriot. It is a paragraph ‘“‘hard to under- stand” and extremely vague. It is not quite clear what the people of Shediac found —the solution of the McCarthy mystery, the Patriot, the town, orthe news. The editor, however, wishes the public to be- lieve a lie. The Patriot published on Satur- day contains the report published in Friday’s St. John papers, which was the proceedings of Thursday's Court. The people of Shediac on Saturday at noon received the Moncton Times of that day giving a full account of Fridays proceedings. It suits the Patriot at times to misrepresent facts if it can by any means gull the people and assist itself. For recklessness and untruthful statements it is fast becoming proverbial. Will the editor of the Patriot admit his error.

Montreat, June 4. Almost contrary to expectation, Mr. Joly succeeded in inducing Mr. Turcotte to act as Speaker, and had him elected. Indications of the result were so clear as to demoralize the ultra-Conservatives, who had not the courage to propose a candidate.

Mr. Chepleau bitterly denounced the press which supported the Government, as well! as Mr. Turcotte. ‘The latter said he was now, as ever, a Conservative; but ready to act an in- dependent part, and was not a tame follower of any Government.

There were 33 votes for the Government and 32 against. The decision was received with great cheering.

There is some fear that the situation at Con- ee will necessitate collective action as proposed by the Berlin memorandum.

Constantinople advices indicate a better state of fepling. The successful conclusion of nego- tiations for a Congress has taken a great bur- den of anxiety off the public mind.

An official bulletin, issued at ten o’clock to- night, says that the Emperor has been free from pain this evening. During the day he repeatedly slept calmly, and took nourish- ment with some appetite. = SS

A queer case of somnambulism happened im Frankfort, Me., last week. John Reyden of Belfast, mate of a schooner loading at Frank- fort, got up in the night and walked to Bel: fast, some eighteen miles, in a somnambulistic state.

The bill appropriating $5,500,000 to pay the award of the Halifax commission was taken up in the United States Senate on Friday after- noon, and briefly considered, a motion for an executive session precluding lengthy debate
