Few crops thrive vvellyon acid soils. Especially is this true oi clover, which is one oi the most important‘ crops considered. both from thelstsndpoint of food value and a ean improverlofsoii fertil- ity. liencs, it we expect to increase the yield and at the same time im- prove fertility, we must first study our soils and be reasonably sure that they have been treated in such a manner as will facilitate a maximum growth. Examinations show that the soil‘ oi many com- paratively lsrge areas in Eastern Canada is acid.

To determine the most economic- al and effective method ior the cor- rection of this soil acidity an ex- periment was started at the Ex- perimental Farm, NappanfN. 8-. using ground limestone at diiierent rates per acre. This soil has been tested and found to bh distinctly acid.

The field used for this test was cleared during the fall oi 191B and spring of 1916. The land was ploughed and given an even dress- ing oi barnyard manure at the rate of twelve tons per acre. 1n the spring oi 1917 the thirteen acre field was divided into acre lots.

The first flvelplots received an an piicstion of ground limestone rang- ing from one to five tons per acre. respectively. Plot six was left as a check, while plots seven to eleven inclusive were duplicates oi one and five, and plots twelve and thir- teen were checks.

All plots were sown to grain the spring of 1917 and seeded down with the- ten pounds oi red clover, ten pounds oi timothy and two pounds oi alsike. ln 1918 it was in clover and in 1919 timothy.

Calculating the returns from the

~ average of two plots, over a period

oi three years, charging the ground limestone at $4.80 per ton, grain, straw and hay at 7B cents per bush- el, $6.00 and $12.00 per ton respect- ively, the following results were ob- tained. .

Where one ton was used the loss over the cost of limstone was 38c per acre. Two tons gave s profit oi $3.56 per acre. Three tons gave a profit oi $2.71 per acre, four a loss oi $2.86 per acre and five gave s profit oi $1.69 per acre.

The returns from the first‘ three acre Rots are about as one would expect to see, but numbers four and five are just the reverse. This can be accounted for by plots elev- en and twelve being more fertile than any other plots in the field. consequently, the yields were beav- ier.

The first six acre plots were very uniform in fertility through- out, and in comparing results oh- tained from these plots each year for three consecutive years, the beneficial effect oi the ground lime- stone was most marked, especially between the limed and unlimed plots.

Very little difference in yield was noted between the D1015 W19" three, four and five tons of lime had been applied. One oi the most outstanding differences between the limed and outlimed plots was two-thirds clover and the balance

The purpose of this article is to call the attention of the smaller. breeders, the beginners in the business, to ‘the possibilities in advertising any live stock which they have ior sale. For exam- ple every year at the Central Ex- perimental Farm, Ottawa, there is a deluge of enquiries as to the pos- sibility oi purchasing young ani- mals oi the various classes oi live stock. Needless to say the Farm is unable to fill sll wsnts for ob- vious reasons such as being sold out of the sex wanted; and not keeping representatives oi the breed wanted. ln an endeavour to assist our correspondents to loc- ate the animals they wished to purchase it has often been found and sometimes too late that breed- ers right i ntheir own vicinity hsd animals oi the class oi stock want- ed ior sale, but as they had not been advertised for sale nor had‘ the intending purchaser advertised] chance to do business which would his wants, both parties ruissed u have benefited both.

From the above it would seem that a more extended scheme 0i advertising on the part of breed- ers who $.16 either in need oi or wish to dispose oi‘ stock would be profitable for all parties concern ed. This advertising need not be very expensiveA small notice in the proper column of the local paper or in one of the farm papers which is popular in the district would serve the desired purpose quite adequately. li the number and quality of the animals war- rant it, a larger advertisement with an illustration would be in order.

Advertisingjs oi course of par- ticular value in disposing oi breeding stock or animals not in ilt condition for sale on the regu- lar market. The writer has in mind one particular class of stock namely, aged pure bred dairy bulls of good quality and known to be breeding stock. Many of these find their way to the butchers every year when it would be much to the advantage of the breed as well as to the farmers disposing of then and lucky enough to get them, if they were kept for further years of service. A little timely advertis- ing would in many cases accom- plish this end,
