Eight Crown Witnesses Heard Before Supreme Court Recesses

Members of the grand jury yesterday heard eight witnesses for the crown in the first case of the fall sessions of the Supreme Court being heard here — the een vs. Wendell Sherman Francis Grady. Summerside. charged with robbery against Gerard Dalton of Bloomfield (Ll the night of Sept 23 in the St. Nicholas area.

In his testimony Mr. Dalton told of meeting the accused Flicker Taxi stand on the night of the 22nd and later at A11st Seafood Restaurant where he hired the accused to drive him to Bloomfield.

Before leaving for Bloomfield Grady had stopped at a number of houses. telling Dalton he was looking for his aunt to tell her where he was going. the testi- mony continued.

As they were proceeding our- side of town Mr. Dalton said they came upon three hitchhik- ers along the side of the road and the accused had stopped to pick them up.

Mr. Dalton said he didn't re- call if they were "thumbing" or just standing alongside the road and added that when he tried to strike up a conversation with them Grady had said they didn't talk much.

Later on. as the car was pro- ceeding towards its destination. the witness said he had asked the accused to stop the car so he could seek relief at which time the vehicle had turned off

Samuel Eric Bill Woodside. a teller with the Royal Bank of Canada in Charlottetown and John Alfred Comeau of the same bank told of two men appearing in the bank on the 25th of Sep- tember and trying to redeem a torn half of a $20 bill.

Mr. Woodside said he rec- ognized the two men as being from Summerside. one of whom he later learned to be Leonard Joseph White. The other man, whose name he did not learn, was not the accused. he said.

Mr. Comeau said he had tord the men that the bill could not be negotiated — that it would have to be sent to the Bank of Canada for redempion.

He added that the man with the hilt had consented to leave it with him and had given his

SAME BILL

Cpl. Leslie oi‘ Sackvilie. who is employed as a document examiner with the crime de- tection lab in Sackville, told of receiving the two torn por- tions of a $20 bill—the half which Dalton had given the RCMP and the portion turned in at the bank.

Upon examination he had found that both bore the same serial numbers and that the rough edges of the torn por- tions bore similarities. Upon continuing investigation he had come to the conclusion that the torn portions had formed one bill at one time.

Albert .Reginald Gay told of picking up Dalton at Siemon Park on the night of the 22nd and driving him into Summer- side as far as the Flicker Taxi stand. He stated he could see Dalton had been drinking by his speech and in the fact that he was staggering.
