At last no one would play at court for fear of being ruined, and to find partners aud opponents the Queen was soon led to admit the worst society. Her card parties consequently became tumnltuous and scan- dalous. Marie Antoinette’s salon was open to all; blackguards were introduced, and one was arrested who gave one of the bankers a rouleau of chips instead of louis. Some of the Queen's gambling companions picked Count Dillon’s pocket and got 500 louis dur ($2,500.)
In England things had been nearly as bad. Elizabeth was no gambler, but when the Stnarts ascended the throne play ran high. Henrieits Maria, the wife of Carles the First, inherited the gambling tastes of he: father, the amorous and pleasure- loving Henri IV., and when Bassompierre, also an arrant ‘‘sport,” was in England on an embassy, in 1626, he and the Queen and Buckingham sat at a window in Cheap side playing primero for stakes while wait- ing for a procession to pass.
Wien Charles the Second was restored the pleasures and manners of his court were practically identical with the French court, and his beantifal favorites, the Duchess of Mazarin, the Duchess of Cleve- land, the Duchess of Portsmouth, Nell Gwynne, and their associates carried gamb- ling to lengths before unknown in Eng- land, The Duchess of Mazarin, a niece of the Cardinal, lost more than a million louis d'or ($5,000,000), and ended her life in beggary. Nell Gwynne lost £5,000 to her rival, the Duchess of Cleveland, at one sit- ting, and the immense fortune of the latter was squandered at the basset taile.
In 1796 Chief Justice Kenyon delivered a charge in which he dealt on this scandal and threatened to send even the first ladies of the land to the pillory if they were convicted of play at faro before him

In 1797 Lady Buckinghamshire, a very notorious gambler, got into trouble with the city authorities, being convicted with Lady Luttere!l and Mrs. Sturt at the police court and fined £50 ($250) for playing at faro. Heury Martindale was also fined £200 ($1,000) for keeping the faro table at Lady Buckinghamsiire’«, and the same lady slept with a blunderbuss and a pair ot pistols at her side every night in order to protect her faro tank. A bushel box is coming into use with market men, and by reason of being square, it is very economical in the way of pack ing. It is made in three styles, one all slatted, another with a slatted bottom and

Of course, viher crops can be Landiled in this way, such as cucumbers, tomatoes and apples. The measure of these boxes is 14; 163x124, that being a bushel with out piling.
A House Without Stairs.
A unique house is being built in Paris for a private gentleman. There will be no staircase in it, and yet it will be a house several stories high This sounds like a paradox, but it is explained in this way: The street ia which it is being built is the Rue Muller, which has a step yradient.
