Followers of English rugby must be watching with interest the attempts of Prince of Wales college to revive the interest in the English brand of football in Charlottctown and the col- lege team has drawn at least a little response to their practices.

A town team under the coaching of Dr. Jelkes has been scrimmaging at the Queen Elizabeth field and has. issued a challenge to the local collegians. The match is tentatively set for this Saturday afternoon at the SDU football! field immediate-

J. J. Coyle, Gordon Bennétt and Earl Nicholson have been working out regularly at Memorial Field and if Saturday's con- test is anything like those of former years play in the city then a good afternoon of enjoyment should be on hand.

Fana will remember the terrific battles staged between the 8DU intermediate rugby team and PWC for the Island Inter- mediate title back through the years. There was never one of these tilts that was not fought right down to the wire and scores were always indicative of the play. 3 ,

Under the guiding hand of A. J. MacAdam the powerful Saints..went through the season undefeated and downed Mt. Allison '4-0 to take the Intercollegiate football title. Two weeks later the locals travelled to Sackville, N.B., to meet the Halifax Wanilerers in a match for the McCurdy Cup, emblematic of the Maritime Rughy championship and trampelled the Halifax Wan- derers to the tune of 11-0.

A word of explanation about the MacCurdy Cup. Senior tears throughout the Maritimes competed in a league and ‘the Intercollegiate champs were allowed to challenge the league winner for the trophy. More often than not the town teams car- ried home the winers glory.

Dewn through the years the SDU club and the Charlotte- tewn Abbies often met for the P.E.I. rugby title, but this was

1952 the Abbies were disbanded and the Nomads under Dr. J. J. Coyle were brought into existence, These Nomads won the McCurdy Cup in 1985 downing the Acadia Axemen and Charlottetown started to get the name as being one of the hot- test rugby centers in the Maritimes.

However the Canadian game of football was adopted by the colleges and although the Saints held out for e few more years they couldn’t swim against the tide and consequently entered the new league. With the flow of players that had supplied the Abbies and Nomads cut off the game died slowly in the city and this is the first attempt to revive it for the past few years.
