Prince Edward lslandera. Do we really "shut. out the evening" from our eyes? Are we insensible to the cnchantment of our pinewoods and pastures at dusk, to the “sheer sil- ver" of our creeks and streams and the brooding charm of our "sleep- ing sand-dunes circled by the sea"? Are we intent only on the daylight tasks about the farm, regardless of the beauty and significance of na- ture all around us? Surely Mil Livesay has Judged us superficially in this respect. We are not indif- ferent! But we are a shy people, hesitant in attempting to express emotions which, alter all, we have not the words adequately to ex- press. That, as Miss Livesay knows, is really the poet's business. That is precisely what she has done for us in the verses referred to. We can pardon the mistake she has made in view 0f the magnificent compliment which her criticism implies. “You are living," she tells us in effect, "in an enchanted land, you people on the farms of Prince Edward Island; but, you do not know it." Arid our reply is that we know it. very well, but the magic word for it escapes us. We know it in 'a profoundly intimate way. as the tree knows the earth from which it springs. We know it so well that we can apply every

NEW VOICE IN POETRY

The post-war period has been singularly barren in poetic expres- sion. Perhaps the pace at. which wc are living is too rapid for self analysis and conscientious study of nature in and around us. The sense of wonder, of awareness to the symbolic meaning of things which is the essence of poetry, is hard to retain in an age oi unprecedented mechanical development and ccon- omic upheaval. There is still, of course, a considerable output of sentimental twaddle in verso. Such productions boar but a superficial resemblance to the type of liter- ature which we are discussing. The most difficult task for the modern poof. has been to get out of the rut of sentimentality, to find a fresh approach, to bring, as Conrad fine- ly expressed it, the light of magic suggcstlvencss t0 play for an even-- ascent instant over the common» place surface of words-of the old, old, words, worn thin and defaced by ages of careless usage.

To such a task one of our young- er Canadian writers, Miss Dorothy Livcsay, has brought rare talent and sincerity in a volume of poems Just issued by the Macmillan Com- pany of Canada, Ltmited. The book

Russia and Poland are rejoicing over the ratlfcation of a non-ag- gression pact, which should also be welcomed in other countres. It means that two nations which have recently been at odds are desirous of continued peace and that one cause of international friction has been removed.

As a people we are generally agreed that it is only good sense. good health insurance to have the family doctor examine us once a year, and the dentist go over the teeth twice a year. . _

There is another part of us that is very important, and where con- ditions can change from time to time that we do not think about. because there may be no pain or distress there.

I refer to the eyes.

In the majority of us there is not the need for frequent eye examin- ations because no matter what our occupation or howmuch or little we use the eyes, Nature has so manag- ed matters that the eyes can read- ily “accommodatc" themselves to almost any and every condition.

However research physicians are now learning that a number of all- ments apparently far removed from the eyes, arc due to eyestrain.

“Everyone knows that headaches may be caused by eyestrain. but it is not generally recognized how many other complaints may also be due to this cause-dyspepsia, sleep- lessness, a general feeling attired-

nesa or lassitude.

The reason that eye strain is not suspectedas the cause of these ail- ments is because the eyesight is good—no trouble or pain on reading or using the eyes in other ways.

Dr. E. Clarke, London, England, believes that this good vision is ob- tained only by the use of a great amount of nervous energy. Small erros in eyesight can be corrected by Nature itself but. in correcting these erros during all the time the eyes are being used, means that the brain must be constantly sending out impulses to the little muscles of the eyes during all the waking hours.

In those who are strong and rug- ged this extra expenditure of nor- vous energy doesrft seem to inter- fere with health, but in those who
