How many times do you find yourself saying, "if I only had something to dol” when you're faced with some spare time? Act- ually, free time is I. wonderful thing, but doesn't it set to be sort ol A bug-s-bear when you can't seem to find anything exciting to do with it? The other day the writer decided to find out what really was doing in this city oi ours, and after digging down deep into the subject, we came up with a surprising number of answers. This time let's take I look at the Kids.
Our "Johnny's" and "Sues" are kept pretty busy with school most of the time, but when the school bell ,rings those young students make for the great outdoors like s herd oi wild horses let out of cor- ral. which is, after all, a perfectly natural reaction.

Did you ever wonder why athlet- ics are a part of the activities of schools and colleges? At this point some guy would grumble, "They're just a waste of time. They should be abolished. Kids can't study and play games tool" Now you and I know that Gloomy Gus couldn't be farther from right, because athlet- ics not only provide school child- ren with the fun and recreation that anyone needs to keep going on an even keel. but they help de- velop strong health and alert minds. They teach participants good sportsmanship and fair.plsy. and the ability to work, and get along, as well as giving confidence and a feeling of well-being. only when athletics are taken too seri- iously and carried too far is there any cause to doubt the great bene- fit to all those who participate in them. ,
As well as out-door play, recrea- tion includes the games children play indoors-during-rest periods in school. or when attending al- most any youth organization, chil- dren play games. Besides being fun. games have a valuable influ- ence on the players. Association with other boys and girls. in itself. helps children adjust themselves to the world around them. By playing and winning. they learn to take success in stride. By playing and losing, they learn to be good sports.

Recreation consists oi another side which is neither athletics nor izsmes but lots of fun nonetheless. Under this ciassiilcr-ition come- singing, music appreciation. read- ing. learning to play a musical in- strument. art lessons, acting in plays, dancing. and hobbies of all kinds. Although most of these thins: must be learned they can never be classified as work. (Any- thing that is allowed to become an unpleasant duty, though. is no longer recreation!) These nctivitles, besides being wonderfulrpastimes. develop latent talents. and some- times even become the stepping- stnnes to successful careers. Most important of all, though. is the fact that they create a great deal of happiness, and the old saying that busy people are happy people certainly applies in this case.
Now let's take a look in at the schools and see what the kids are doing for recreation:

The younger Campbell, Melville. didn't bring home the marbles, but he and his cohorts, David silli- phant, Garth Jenkins. and Ben- nett Clough were the real Cinder- ella team of the series. Their fond- ost supporters didn't expect them to win any games, but their fight- ing spirlt carried them right to the finals. It was they who virtually eliminated both of the Charlotte- town tcaim. They defeated the first team 14-11, and alter the Capital City fours plnyed each' other with one bound to be elim- inated, Mel Campbell's scrappy broom wieidcrs outiasted the sur- vivors in s bitter. nip-and-tuck strusizle which must have sapped some of the boys' energy. is it any wonder they were sitting ducks (or brother Alex's sherpshooters when they played them less than two hours later?

Ubriaco Holds Long lead In Scoring Race
Johnny Ubriaco, 27 year old centrsman of the saint. John Beavers remained nine points out in front during the past week in the race for M. M. H. L. point scoring honors.
Ulbriaco has 34 220315 and 43 as- sists for a total of 77 points. nine more than runner-up Bud Poile or the Glace Bay Miners. Willie Marshall of the Islanders and Len Haley of the Miners are tied for third place with 67 points.
Centreman Billy Watson of liai- ifax made the biggest gain during the week to move up to fifth place with 66 points. Kenny Watson is in sixth place wlih 65 points and team-mate Tom Smeile in seventh with 84.
