Alternate Living Program

Queens County Residential Services is acommunity based service providing a variety of residential op- tions to adults who are mentally handicapped.

Q.C.R.S. services are designed to promote and facili- tate the personal growth of clients, so as to enhance

their potential to live, work and socialize within their community.

One of the services offered through Q.C.R.S. is Alternate Living Program. The A.L.P. supports adults who are mentally handicapped to live independ- ently in their community with minimal supports. The client may choose from a variety of options, which include room and board, family placement, independ- ent living, orsupported apartment.

Of particular interest to students is the supported apartmentconcept. With this arrangement anA.L.P. client is matched with a support person/roommate wh can live in the client’s apartment and provide support and training in the client’s recognized areas of need. An excellent example is ‘‘Connie’’. She is arecent graduate of U.P.E.I. and has been living with ‘‘Heather’’ (A.L.P. client) for 2 1/2 years. Connie says this has been the ideal arrangement for herasa student. The program allows Connie the freedom to

be a full-time student, as Heather is employed durin; the day.

Connie also adds that her experience asa live-in support person has been an asset when seeking em- ployment and has been a valuable reference.

Connie admits that the program is challenging and requires a great deal of maturity, responsibility and dedication on her part. Says Connie, *‘ Heather is tl

best roommate I’ve ever had. She is like part of th family’’.

Remuneration is determined through the developme of acase plan and can include compensation for liv

expenses and a support and training allowance. Pa time positions are also available.
