During a residence in America, no obscrvin person can Ihll to have remarkhd, whether he travel in node, the United States, or Texas, the vast number of Irish thmilies to be met with. They hear such distinctly-marked pecu- liarities, that no mistake can occur in attriba rig to them their native soil. It has been my lot to visit man of the settlements of these wunderers mm the on ice; but nowhere did I meet any family which so singularly inter- ested me, as one which a few months back was residing within the limits of the young republic of Texas, consist- ing of the father, mother, a son and two daughters. Old Rock, or as he is generally called, Captain Rcck—a name doubtless assume-d—emigrated to America seventeen years ago—his family then consisting of two daughters ; for the son was born afterwards in the land of his ado tion. For seven years, the sturdy Irishman (originally we informed and well educated, though his early history was never known) contended with t o dilliculties incident to new settlers, with various success,in difierent parts of the Union, when he was induced to join the first band of ad- venturers who. under General Austen, obtained leave from the Mexican ovcrmnent to locate themselves in The family o teined it grant of land as a matter of course ; but ol ock did not fancy settled agricultural pursuits. To have round him it well-stocked farm. cleared and roduetive fields and herds of cattle, would have required a degree of perseverance and atient personal labor of which he was incapable. He preferred the life ofa wanderin squatter, upon which he at once entered. and which he as never since deserted. Building a boat, old Rock embarked in ' on one of the Texian rivers, with his famil , an old gun, and a small stock of ammu- nition, and, following the windin s of the stream, did not stop until he came to an abnn oned log-hut, or frame house, where he thought he might find temporary accom- modation.

Of these deserted houses Texas has man , their abun- dance arising from various cuuses—death rom fever, the terrible civil war, or, oftener still, from men having hastil chosen a location, and built thereon, before it was foun out that the spot was undesirable and un reductive. Rock was not nice. lfthe neighborhood supp ied gains, he was satisfied. Sometimes an acre of sweet otatoes, Indian corn, and um kins, might be put an or cultivation; otherwise, the amily lived entirely u n venison, wild fowl. fish and oysters, and, it was whis sred, pork upon occasion. A reported fondness for this latter article was one of the csiiscs of old Rock's frequent mi tions. No sooner did he pitch himself in any neighbor cod, than, it was said, pork was at it premium. Pi certainly disap- peared moat mysteriously; but though a I threw the blame u it Rock, he ever averre tho panthers, wolves, and stray hunters, to have been the real culprits. However this might be, after some months‘ residence in any par- ticular s t, the family usually received a polite notice to

Tim laughed heartily at my mistaking her for an Indian, and then, csutioning me to speak low, until all the houses on the river were seed, we placed ourselves in the craft, and commence our voyage. I, knowing the bayou to u nicety, acted as steersman. Mary sat next with a ddle, and Tim in the bows with an- other: It seems , that, determined to have me at their wedding, the brother and sister, with the consent of their friends, had started to fetch me, leelin certain that I would come, after the promises I had me. e to that efi'ect. it seemed that they had judged rightly, for here was I, in company with two of the rudest settlers in the wilder- nose, embarked in a frail canoe to go I knew not whither —nor did I much care. This roving spirit it was, indccd, which initiated me into many secrets and mysteries of the woods and prairies which escape the more sober an methodical. The record of that night’s journey would in itself be a curious chapter in western economy ; but more import ant matters forbid. From the records of the Unite States Courts itsppcars that no vessel was seized, and but five persons arrested for violations of the laws u ainst the slave trade, between the years 1845 and 1854. Two of these parties forfeited their recognisances, one turned State'c evidence, and no

The success whic has attended these efibrts is shown by the rcgnant facts that, though three slavers have been seized and forty-six men held to answer under the various statutes. two convictions only have taken place; and the merchant who is all but known to be at the bottom of the whole business is still at large, there not being sufliciont proof to warrant his arrest, and con- tinues to send at least one vessel it month to the coast of Africa. Why this is, where the blame should be laid,

In the case of a foreign vessel, which the Julia Moulton was proven to be, the act only applies to those of her crew who are citizens of the United States. Capt. Smith was a German by birth. But the Govern- ment introduced his Custom-llouse oath that he was an American citizen, which was held sulllcisnt for the pur- poses of the prosecution, until dis rov A new trial was, however, subsequently grante , on the ground that there was not sullicient evidence of citizenship to warrant a conviction.
