Pop-guns Discharged.

From the columns of Saturday’s Patriot all the pop-guns of the Oppesition have discharged their small shot upon the head of the Government and its supporters ; and, from the Premier and ‘‘ Mr. Speaker ” to the door-keeper of the Legislative Coun- cil, none has escaped a shot. It seems, too, as though the attack were not the ‘‘ flash and outbreak of fiery minds,” but rather, as Shakespeare puts it, the result of—

‘¢ A savageness in unreclaimed blood Of general assault.’ In any case, it is scarcely worthy of serious regard.

In the case of the ‘* Speaker” we are, however, glad to have an opportunity of congratulating Mr. J. A. McDonald. He is one of the most successful representatives ever sent to the Assembly. He does not inference is that he thinks a good deal. At all events, it is certain that his always open to the wants of his District and the Province at large; and few know better how and when to impress upon the Government the importance of attend- His constituents know

ing to those wants. this perfectly well; and no hon. member in the House has a firmer hold upon his Dis- trict than he. The attack of the Patriot is in keeping with its conduct to all who do not bow at the Grit shrine,and humbly fol- low L. H. Davies and Alexander McKenzie, and Mr. McDonald can well afford to treat it with contempt.

Mr. Fisher, in his short and pointed let- ter, deals effectually with the attack upon the Clerk’s office. We have only to remark that, probably, the pop-gun editor had in rememberance the fact that, in 1877, the Davies Government appointed Mr. Albert Yates to th® office of Assistant Clerk of the House at an allowance of $425; and, at the close of the session, paid Mr. F. W. Hughes $300 for doing Mr. Yates’ work !

It is not our habit to bespatter political friends with praise oz to defend them when their acts are indefensible. Let them be judged by their deeds. Mr. Gorman and others attacked by the Patriot are entitled toa fair trial. When they fail in their duties it will be time enough to censure them.

News from the Magdalenes.

AN esteemed correspondent at George- town writes :—

The steamer ‘‘ Albert” returned on Sun- day from her first trip to the Magdalen Islands. She reports no disasters or wrecks there during the fall or winter.

The seal fishery was a great success there this year. Allthe vessels that fitted out got loaded; and it is said about twenty thousand were taken from the shore, hav- ing come in on the ice. Very few herring have appeared yet, and the quality is poor and small. No vessels had arrived there up to Saturday morning. There is a con- siderable quantity of ice near the Mag- dalenes; but not much on this Island side.

The ‘‘ Albert” will sail again for the Magdalenes on Wednesday, the 7th May, and will continue to make weekly trips there with the mails during the balance of the season.

Tue M. A. Srarn at Bayriesp.—ad{r. Fishwick’s steamer M. A. Starr having re- sumed her trips to Charlottetown and inter- mediate ports, the people of Bayfield, Anti- gonish County, on the occasion of her arrival at that port, presented a complimen- tary address to her commander. Capt. J. E. Hadley, expressing their admiration of Mr. Fishwick’s enterprise and their satis- faction at the continuance of the Govern- ment subsidy, and congratulating Capt. Hadley, as an Eastern man on his appoint- ment to the command of the steamer. The address was signed by the principal inhabitants of Baytield. Capt. Headley made a suitable reply.—H2:, Chron.

Odd-Feliowship.

THE NATAL DAY CELEBRATION—ENTERTAIN- MENT IN MARKET HALL.

Tne proceedings of Odd-Feliows’ Natal Day were closed in Charlottetown by a grand entertainment in Market Hall There was a good audience, and the Hall was nicely decorated. W. C. DesBrisay, Esq., occupied the Chair. In the course of his opening address, he said :—

The number of active Lodges belonging to the Order in this jurisdiction 1s at the present time twenty-nine (29), four of which belong to Prince Edward Island, seven to New Bruns- wick, and eighteen to Nova Scotia, and the total membership was, on the 30th day of June, two thousand and fifty-seven (2057)— ‘the additions for the past year having been two hundred and eighty (280), exclusive of suspensions and removals for various reasons. Two hundred and thirty-five of this member- ship belongs to Prince Edward Island; 645 to New Brunswick, and 1177 to Nova Scotia.

‘A bar2 statement from year to year of our annual increase conveys an imperfect idea, however, of our actual progress. ‘To compre- hend fully tie rate at which we have ad- vanced, it is necessary to go back a few years, and compare the past with the present. When this is done it will be found that in the mid summer of 1869 ourjurisdiction contained three (3) Lodges only, viz :—‘‘Kastern Star,” ‘‘Ful- ler,’ and ‘‘Norton,”’ and a membership of about one hundred and eighty-five. The Lodges just named were instituted respec- tively in 1854, 1858, and 1859, and have now the proud satisfaction of seeing their un wavering faith and firm fidelity crowned with success.

During the Fall of 1869 three new Lodges were established—‘‘Pioneer,” (St. John); ‘‘St. Lawence,” (Charlottetown); and ‘‘Griffith,” (fruro); and from then till now our progress has surpassed the fondest expectations of our warmest friends and fellow-workers. At the Annual Session, which was held in Pictou in August, 1870. six (6) Lodges were reported, with a membership of two hundred and sixty- six (266), and a Relief disbursement for the year of $219. In eight years, therefore, our membership has increased nearly eight fold, our Lodges nearly five fold, and our disburse- ments for relief tenfold.

The music, both vocal and instrumental, was for the most part good. Professor Caven and Herr Hermans sang excellently well as usual ; and the songs of Mr. L. J. Williams, Mr. J. E. Welsh and Mr. Rogers were greatly appreciated. The latter's ‘“speech” was a very palpable hit. The playing of the Orchestral Club was very fine ; and their selections first-class. Mr. C. F. Yates contributed the following or- iginal poem :—

Hon. Donatp Ramsay, of Hamilton, Lot 18, died on Monday last. Mr. Ramsay for some years held a seat in the Legislative Council of this Province. He was a quiet, industrious man, and was highly respected by the whole community,—Progress.

Tue New Brunswick convicts are to be re- moved to the new penitentiary in July next. We presume that we shall get rid of some of our beauties at the same time. We hope the Local Government will not forget to send up their little bill for maintaining them so far.

A LETrerR from the Victoria Park Keeper, in another column, contradicts the part of our City Council proceedings which states that his resignation was accepted by the City Council. Either the Council or Mr. Curtis have mistcok their action; for we can assure them that the adoption of the report of the Park Committee means nothing less than the acceptance of his (Mr. Curtis’) resignation.

Tue Halifax Herald in its financial and commercial report for the week ending Satur- day last, well and truly says: ‘‘Is it now about time such people as the following were made to work for an honest living somehow-~go on a farm—even break stone, or do something in- stead of existing on the hard earnings of other people.” It then trots out two Island firms who respectively offer 2 and 3 cents to the dollar, and asks, ‘‘Is 1¢ not disgraceful ?”

On Saturday evening Mr. R. B. Thomas and Master George Davies, son of Benj. Davies, Esq., narrowly escaped drowning while shooting in the harbor. They were bringing their boat about near the ‘* Three Tides,” when, through some mishap, she upset, and they jumped into the river. Both returned and held on to the keel of the beat, and were rescued by the Rocky Point Yerryboat in an exhausted condition, after being about half an hour in the water.

O'Neill was fined $2 and costs or 8 days for being drunk and incap- able; Colin Chisholm, for the same offense, was fined $3 and costs or 14 days. The case of Malcolm: McLeod, for selling liquor without license, was further postponed till Wednesday. James McIntyre, on remand, charged with picking handkerchiefs from pockets of several young ladies on Grafton lstreet on the night of the 16th, was sen- itenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Mr. Hooper has given notice that he will introduce a bill to enable the Court of Chancery in Ontario to dissolve the con- tract of marriage in certain cases.

His Excellency the Governor-General, accompanied by Capt. Houbord, A.D.C., and the Misses Montalba, visited the Sen- ate and House of Commons chambers, the library, ete., this morning.

A petition of a number of pilots was brought down to the House yesterday even- ing. They ask that the pilotage fund shall be placed under the charge of the Government.

The Canada Gazette to-day contains the appointment of two additional official as- signees.

Voting on the Canada Temperance Act will take place in the county of King’s, P. E. I. and county of Lambton, Ont., on the 29th of May.

A deputation from St. John, N. B., has arrived here for the purpose of protesting against the new Insolvent Act, in so far as the clause doing away with compositions is concerned.
