Creeling the Bridegroom.

A curious custom in connection with marriage prevailed at one time in Scotland, and from the manner in which it was carried out was called “‘Creeling the Bridegroom.” The mode of pro- cedure in the village of Galashiels, was as follows: Early in the day after the marriage those interested in the pro- ceedings assembled at the house of the newly-wedded couple, bringing with them a ‘“‘creel’’ or basket, which they tilled with stones. The young husband, on being brought to the door, had the creel firmly fixed to kis back, and witb itin this position had to run the round of the town, or at least the chief por- tion of it, followed by a number of men to see that he did not drop his burden, the only condition on which he was allowed to do so being that his wife should come alter himand kiss him. As relief depended altogeth, upon the wife, it would sometimes happen that the husband did not need to run more than a tew yards,but when she was more thap ordinarily bashful, or wished to have a little sport at the expense of her lord and master—which, it may be suppos- ed, would not unfrequently be the case —he had to carry his load a consider- able distance. This custom was very strictly enforced, for the person who was lust creeled had charge of the cere- mony, and he was naturally anxious that no one should escape. The prac- tice, as far as Gulashields was concern- ed, came toanend about sixty years ago in the person of one Rebert Young, who, on the ostensible plea ot a “sore back,” lay abed all the day after his marriaye, and obstinately refused to get up and becreeled. He had been twice married before, and, no doubt, felt that he had had enough of creeling.

Small versus Large Farms.

Our own notion is that small farms well cultivated, are almost invariably the most profitable; and hence, we firmly believe (what bas so often been asserted), that if many a farmer would

seli half or two-thirds of the acres he now occupies, and poorly tills and manages, and devote his entire time

and energies to the care and cultivation of the remainder,be would derive more profit from his labor and investment, with much less vexation of spirit. The factis, as somebody truly asserts, we have too many farmers who are “land poor’—who have so much land they cannot make a living. Paradoxical as this may appear, it applies truthfully to many a naturally fertile and productive locality. When such farmers bave learned that is not economy to own more land than they can till in the most profitable manner, so that it will pay for the money expended in keeping it free from taxes, weeds, aud other en- cumberances, they will have solved the problem of ease in practical rural life. The happiest and thriftiest farmers we have ever known lived on farms of only ten to one hundred acres, every foot of which was made to count. On the other hand,the farmer who has so mavy broad acres that he cannot walk over them daily—where rods of fence corners are never cultivated or otherwise utilized —lives a life of anxiety and worry. Instead of working iike slaves and liv- ing in a miserly manner, in order to| “run a big farm,” or purchase “all the! land that joins them,” it would be wise | for hosis of farmers to seli some of their | broad avres, coucentrate their effurts
