THE BELFAST DISTRICT.
Messrs. McLeas axp Woe¢p are in the tield for the representation of Belfast in Provincial Legislature. Their selection by the Convention was, on the final vote, unanimous. All the electors of Belfast who are opposed to the existing combin- ation, operated by Mr. Fred Peters, Q. C., will, we feel sure, rally with alacrity to the support of McLean and Wood.
The people of the Belfast District have set an example to all the Districts which have not yet selected their candidates to oppose the Peters Administration. Now that the crops are in, there is time for common action on the part of those who do not wish to see their country hopelessly encumbered. We hope thai there will be prompt action all along the line, and that organization for the election that must come will be perfected as soon as possible.

We are glad to learn that a decided step has been taken towards securiug new athietic grounds for Charlottetown. A BIG ADDITION.
It appears that the addition to the debt of Canada to which the Minister of Fin. ance obtained the consent of his obedient supporters in Parliament a few days ago is much greater than was at first supposed. According to an Ottawa despatch the Gov- ernment had authority to borrow thirteen or fourteen millions in aidition to the sum lately asked, makiog a power to raise a loan of twenty-eight or twenty-nine millions to be added to our public debt. What do our independent farmers think of such finanec- ing ?

Mr. Thos. Green, Grafton St., informs us that he was present in St. John at the celebration of the coronation of King George IV. Mr. Green was a mere child at the time. Several oxen were roasted and ale was freely distributed. Mr. Green’s father had charge of one of the oxen that was roasted. Mr. Green also participated in the celebration at Chatham, N.B., of Queen Victoria’s coronation. He was twenty-one years of age at the time.

Another and very noticeable feature at the Edgehill closing was the art galiery. Probabiy the best iu the exbibition were the paintings, drawings and pen pictures of Miss Loabsy.

Judging by all the proceedings, we should judge that the old college is on the up- grade. We wish her success, and hope that in these, the closing years of the 19th century, she may come up the expecta- tions wh ch were had of her at the close of the eighteeenth.
