CHAPTER IIL. | Norah made her way upstairs into her bedroom, where, to her surprise, she found her sister fast asleep in an arm- chair before the fire.

Feeling in no humor for half measures, she took her by the shoulders and shook her with all her force.

‘Why Norah, what ever is the matter uow?”" asked Mabel, yawning and sleep- ily stretching out her arms.

“Everything,” said Norah, tearing off her gloves. ‘Men were only born to inake women miserable, and they play their parts to perfection. Can’t we leave this horrible place tomorrow?”

“Have you quite taken leave of your senses?” asked the elder sister. ‘‘Con- sider that we rushed out of here at two days’ notice just because you found Lon- don horrible. However,” she went on in her low, monotonous voice, “‘you are a little too impetuous sometimes, as | will show you. I have had a letter to night from Colonel Gerard—a miserable letter, saying you have never answered his. In fact, he is so miserable that he is now on his way out here and will arrive tomorrow. Oh, these lovers!”

And Mabel yawned again.

“But | never got any letter to anawer. What do you mean? My head does ache so! Oh, do speak! What does it all mean, Mabel?’

“It’s very simple, my dear, You con- jured up a situation that never existed between Colonel Gerard and another and rushed away in a fit of jealousy. His letter to you has been forwarded, but aunt forgot all about the letters till to- night. There it is. Well, he will ar- rive in the flesh tomorrow. What are you going to say?”

“What am I going to say?” repeated Norah in a broken voice, covering her face with her hands. ‘Why, tell him that I love him—love him—love him, and always have and always shall.”

“Very well. Only I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to say all that. I think [ll go to bed now. Good night.”

When the door had closed, Norah went to the window, and drawing up the blind looked at the moon. The voyage from London to Constantinople, with its disastrous ending, was only like a bad dream now. But this man, this valet, the supposed Lord Peter Donald—what was to prevent him joking at her ex- | wes among his own set? And Norah

And leaning her head against his shoul- tler she took the letter.

“My servant, Peters, died last week. He never seemed really well after that time he went out to Constantinople by sea, but nevertheless would come this trip with me. He got fever last week und died in three days. He was always a curious, silent man, but a few hours tefore his death he asked me to bury a particular picture with him. I found it in his Bible. It was a photograph of himself and some girl playing chess, but the girl's face was entirely obliterated, evidently with intention. I asked if he had a message to send to any one, but he said he had none, so his secret or whatever it was bas gone to his grave with him, poor fellow.”

And when Norah had read so far the letter dropped from her hands, and sob- bing she let her head fall on her hus- band’s knee.

In size they vary from the size and shape of single gems worn in the ears to elaborations of jewels and pearls, mosaic or filigree, the size of a silver dollar, but generally the size is that of a half dollar In such sizes are seen large dome centers of pearl, set round with brilliants, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, etc., or encircled with Oriental filigree. Again, a large brilliant has the center set round with eight pearls ths size of a small pea, and again vutlined in fine filigree in points of gold, green, blue and various tints. The finest circle of filigree the width of the nai) ontlines a mosiac the size of a dime. Filigree re- sembling the spokes of a wheel is seen round a large diamond set, within six rubies and sapphires. Many of these new buttons are souare in form with a center stone and the square of filigree or a cen- ter stone and squaro of other stones, the four corners being sapphires of ru. bies and the others brilliants. Again, the center may be snosaic with a painting of some tiny flower,such as & Tose, a hearts- ease, a viclet, or a forget-me-not. Sach center paintings also appear in the large- sized round buttons. The flowers, al- though small, are charmingly realistic. Large metal buttons frequently quite gigantic, sport jeweled ce tters, and cel- luloid have gold centers. Th> coloring of the cellnioid is specially good and in great variety. Some of the painted cen- ters ara of the size of » quarter. raised at the center or at the edge, or in- termediately. ‘lhe sizes and shapes of the various gems also produce many pleasing varieties of tout ensemble, Jewel buttons, although presenting exact reprssentations of those to be seen in the shops of venders of real gems, are inexpensive in the extreme in compari- son with the style andeffect.—New York Evening Sun.
