Mr. Eugene Gornian. Chairman of the Fishermen's Loan Board and Director of Extension at St. Dunstan'a University. has been ap- pointed Director of Fisheries for the province. it was announced in the Legislature, yesterday by Hon. Eugene Cullen, Minister of Indus- iry and Natural Resources.

He will succeed Mr. J. A. Rogd f 0 past two years. Mr. Gorman's ap- pointment will take over his new duties on April. An office for fisheries will also be established. if was announced.

Kings County fishermen. in- fluenced by the operations of the Prince Edward Island dragger, Souris II. are showing an increas- ing interest in dragger fishing, it was indicated by Hon. Eu-gene Cullen. Minister of industry and Natural Resources during the dc. bate on the Draft Address in the Legislature yesterday.

"I feel that the Souris if has been reasonably successful. al- though not outstandingly so." he stated. "but a great many fisher- men from the eastern part of the Province have been applying to the Loan Board for money with which to purchase draggers."

Quqtioned about the number of applications he stated that there were five. and there were at least five men required before an ap- plication could be suibmltted.

Asked by Mr. R. R. Bell about the "application of North Rusiico fishermen last year for a dragger. he stated that he believed it was still on file. "We did not want to endanger the drag-ger exiperiment on account of the -hazards in the harbour." he explained.

He believed that the exports from ivhe'ProVince last year were equal to those of the best years. He stated that oil! telegramsthad been received in the trade office during the year.

Eskimo Operations

The Eskimo. he stated, had made 10 trips from the Province during the past season and transported 4,300 tons of produce. About 2.750 tons were exported to Newfound- land and 1446 tons had come into the Province on the boat.

An industrial survey of the Province is being made by Messrs. 8. Graham Rogers, Director of Transportation, and W. E. Agnew. Director of Trade. the Minister stated. lie commended the work of both men.

A three floor addition was construct- ed for dairy products, the - -” floor being reserved for butter storage with a capacity of 600,000 lbs. There are two rooms on the second floor with I capacity of 45,000 lbs. each and the third floor will be used for storing cheese.

He believed that the Govern- ment should experiment with dif-. ferent types of -trees in different areas. "We have been offered fertilizer for experimental purposes free of charge," he added.

One of thepccnditions causing the slowing down of tree growth is too much acid in the soil. He felt that the two recently appoint-' ed forosters were doing a good job and would prove very useful to the Province.

The Minister referred to two villages. Parkdale and Crapaud. which were incorporated last year under the Village Services Act.

Viewing the conditions outside the city limits he stated that there were l,l3tl people in 265 families living in Parkdalc. "137 of these families have water supplied by the city and l23 by pump. Fivo houses have no water supply. There are 202 septic tanks and 83 ouinhouses.

''In the Spring Park and North River area there are l,l48 people in 273 families. 04 of these fam- ilies are supplied with water from the city, 159 by pump and 20 have no water supplies. There are 172 septic tanks and l01 outhouses in the area," he stated.

"r-he conditions are not nearly as bad as we had thought before we made the survey. Nearly half the people are supplied with city water.

"I hope that since Pal-kdale has been incorporated they will be en- couraged to do something for them- selves. If they establish a water system I have no doubt but that

The demand for clearing and draining work by machines was much greater than the supply of the machines. he continued. One machine commenced work in June. the other in July.

Following is an outline of some of the work done by the two ma- chines: 204 jobs done: l903ls acres cleared; 1373 chains ditched; six and a half acres levelled; private lanes ditched, 171 ohalns; water holes and cellars excavated. 10 each; dams filled; land for schools.

Education week At Stella Maris School

During Education Week, the classes of Stella Maris School, North Rustioo, were visited by their Supervisor. Mr. F.E. Doiron. B.A. As usual both teachers and pupils found this visitation very helpful and encouraging. for, as an examiner Mr. Doiron never fails to create in the classroom an at- mosphere conducive to responsive- ness on the part of the pupils.

Thursday of Education Week was Parents' Day in the School. A -iange number of enthusiastic fa- thers and mothers visited the class- rooms. It was a source of genuine satisfaction to them to visit their children in their respective class- rooms and to see the work that is being done ilhere. The tiny tots of Grade I sang very sweetly and showed their ability in nurniblr work. Grades II and III exhibited their work in sewing. The pupils of Grade IV gave a Physical Drill demonstration which was enjoyed immensely by the visitors. Grades V and VI cxccilied in singing Eng- lish and French songs. The pupils of Grade VII had a very interest- ing spelling match. Grades VIII and IX showed their knowledge of Geography. Grade X puzpils proved their skill in Algebra and those of Grade XI met the visitors in the auditorium.

Mr. Doiron expressed his great pleasure on meeting so many of the parents in the school. He con- gratulated them on the interest they thus showed in the education of their children and gave them an inspiring talk on co-operation be- tween parents and teachers.

The visiting parents and the pup- ils then assembled in the Auditor- ium where. through the initiative of Mrs. M.J. Doyle, President of the Home and School Association, educational films were shown. These f.ililm.s were generously sup- plied by the Visual Education Branch of Prince of Wales College. Charlottetown.

Th. Eastern Stars Junior Form- an met in the East Point School. March 7th. with 13 members pre- sent. The president. Joseph Chav- erie called the meeting to order. There was considerable discussion about the coming debate with Farmlngton and it was decided to meet the other group if they were willing. at Elmira Hall on March 20th. some entertainment will be provided.

Morris Deacon, Fieldman. spoke on "Community Organizations" and stressed the set up of grain clubs. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.

Mr. H. J. MacDonald. Dairy Dulnlendent. Blve an interest- ing taik to a group of 30 or more Junior Farmers at Bear River South school on Thursday. March 8th. He stressed the value of good type dairy cows. of testing the milk and of cutting down the cost of feed and labor. The chairman was James Whelan and a vote of thanks was tendered to the speaker.

A few Junior Farmers gathered at Farmlngton School on Friday, March 0th to see a demonstration of milk testing and to hear a talk on the value of milk testing. giv- en by Mr. Earle Adams, Assistant Dairy Superintendent. it is re- gratable that this meeting was no mart widely advertised as this talk was one which would be vai- uable to any milk producer.

A public meeting sponsored by the Llnkletter Calf Club gather- ed at the school. Friday evening, March 9th to see films shown by Morris Deacon, Fieldmen. These films were on loan from the Na- tional Film Board. the titles be- ing: "l-Iog Family Supreme: "Let's All Sing' Together"; "Square Dance Medley"; "Maple Sugar Time"; "Broncho Busters."
