Gladstone and Northcote.

| Telegraphic despatches dated London, Oct. 4th, says:—Gladstone replying to au address presented to him at Pen Maeumawr, yesterday, referred to the question of procedure in, the Commons. He said the House could hever meet the tremendour calls upon its energies unless it could shake off all timidity and fear of cant phrases and set itself resolutely, to the task of bringing procedure into har- mony with the calls upen it. Referring to Egpytian affairs Gladstone said he thauked God for the success of the Brit- ish in Egypt. He thanked the army there and its skilful geveral. The war had proved that the army was composed of meu as brave as their forefathers every where. The war had been car:ied out from love of peace and oo the prineiples of peace. In concluding Gladstone | said he trusted that Egypt would . agaim be prosperous and happy. . His reaiarks

Murder Diabolical. ij

The murder for which Edward Hovey

/ was fouud guilty ia New York the other day was ong of the most diabolical on record, Mrs. Vermilyea, his sister-in- Jaw, gave an asylum to Hovey and his wife, her sister, aud their. sick child. , Hovey had been a shiftless, querulous fellow, and had failed to support his family. On the day before the shooting he fiourished a revolver tireateningly, Mrs. Vermilyea took it from him and hid it. Hovey vowed to be revenged. He pawned a coat on the following day, aud with the money thus obtained bought a pistol. He coneccaled this, in his pocket, and returving to his sister-in- law's house, shot her. His own child died of fright. Yet he boasted of the crime, and when he heard the jury’s ver- dict he said, sneeringly, ‘*That’s just the verdict 1 expected | ” ¢ >_>.

There is great grumbling in Newfound- land over the discriminating duty of two shillings a quinta] levied upon Newfound- land codfish in Spain. Strong representa- tiovs have failed to iudace the British Government to take any action in»the matter. It seems that the duty has been imposed in retaliation for the high British wine duties, A St. John’s paper says :— “It is clear that Newfoundland is ade to suffer for supposed wrong on the part of England ; and we can only hope for relief when the two nations arrive at a settle- ment of their difference.”
