11th ‘Annual Convention Of Na- tional Organization Opened Under Excellent Auspices Yes- terday, ,With Exceptionally Large Attendance At Evening

Session.

Despite inclement weather yes- terday, the first day's session of the 11th annual convention of the Catholic Women's l-teogue was a splendid augury for the success of the convention. Additional delegates arriving Sunday night and yester- day moming- swelled tho attend- ance to about 400, representative of all parts of Canada. -

In the forenodn and afternoon the national executive was in ses- sion anci at 19.30 a luncheon was given in the visiting members by the diocesan executive with Mrs. S. R. Burke presiding. At 5 p.m. the Charlottetown executive were host- esses at tea to the visitors at Beach Grove Inn, the formal opening of the convention being held at 9 p.m. in the Rochford Square Assembly Hall, where addresses of welcome were delivered by Mrs. F. J. Casey, City President. who presided, Rt. Rev. J. A. O'Sullivan. D. D., Bish- op of Charlottetown, His Honour Lieutenant Governor Dalton, and His Worship Mayor Prowsc- The Inaugural Address of Mrs. M. J. Lyons, Ottawa, National President of the League, was followed by ad- dresses by Rev. G. J. McLellan. D. D., and Mr. Justice A. E. Arsen- ault. ‘The programme began with prayer by Rt. Rev. Monsignor M. MacDonald, Rector of St. Dun- stan's Basilica, followed by the singing cf O Canada by the Corpus Christi Choir, and closed with e. vo- cal ensemble by the Choir, after which there was an informal recep- tion and presentation of delegates.

Rt. Rev. Jas. Morrison, Bishop of Antigonish, who was present on the platform last night, added a few words of welcome to the delegates, wishing them every success in their deliberations. '

A feature of the evening was the comprehensive Inaugural Address of the President. Mrs. Lyons, which is given in full elsewhere in this issue. Mrs. Lyons, at the conclusion of her remarks, was presented with two magnificent boquets by Mrs. Frank McPhee for the Senior League and Miss Margaret Dougan for the Junior. '

DELEGATES WARMLY GREETED

Extending greetings to the visit- ing delegates, ms. F. J. Casey. speaking on behalf of the Catholic Women's League subdivision and of the 800 members oi the Charlotte- town diocese, said it was indeeda pleasure and an honour to be priv- ileged to preside at such a meeting. She assured the visitors of a real Prince Edward Island welcome. The delegates have come as represent- atives of every Province. Another event of great importance to this diocese occurred recently in l the arrival here, as Bishop of Char- lottetown, of the Rt. Rev. J. A. 0'Sullivan, D. D., who has already won the esteem and affection of all classes of our citizens.

yplauded as he rose to assure the delegates of the pleasure’ he felt in the privilege of welcoming them to their 11th annual convention at Charlottetown. He saw before him representatives of the flower oi the womanhood of Canada. The chair- man had spoken of the cordiality of a Prince Edward Island wel- come. and the speaker could indorae this statement from his personal experience. 1-1e trusted that the de- liberations oi the convention would be beneficial to Canada and to the diocese, which has behind it a long record of splendid service and achievement. The people of this diocese, he declared, have been ac- customed to carrying on without much advertisement, but they possessed a wonderful fund of brain and heart power. He expressed the hope that the Province also would benefit by the delegates’ visit. Not having experienced the social and economic difficulties confronting other parts of Canada, we would gain by learning how the Catholic Women's League is dealing with these problems from a. national standpoint, and how evils or dan- gers to private and public integrity are being met and overcome. Those who have seen what great work the League has dons in Canada can well realise its value and signifi- cance in our national life. The Church realizes this especially in

Attempts at Rescue by Frantic Parents Proved Unsuccessful.

JONQUIRRIB, Qua, June 29.- The lives of eight little children, ranging in age from eleven months to eleven‘ years, were snuffed out in a. fire early this morning, which destroyed the home of their fath- er Xavier Potvim, a farmer near this Saguenay district town. Mrs. Potvim was seriously burned in an unsuccessful attempt to save two of her babies. ‘

The farther and his wife, who retired about mdlnight, were a- wakened at one a. m. to find the interior of their little frame dwell- lng filled with smoke and all ac? cese to the sleeping quarters oi the children in the upper part of the house cut off. Potvlm, being un- able to reach them, leaped through a. window and ran for s. ladder. When he returned it was too late. The house was a. seething mass of flames and all of their little ones perished. Mrs. Potvim also made a brave attempt to save the child- ren, and to reach two of them she carried them to a window, but was forced to drop them back into the burnig building when she was ov- ercome by smoke. Wtih her cloth- ing enveloped in flames the moth- er had barely time to escape by jumping from the window. She sus- tained severe bruises and was ser- iously burned.

MIAMI, Fla, June ail-Colonel John A. Currie, former member of the Dominion Parliament of Can- ads. and former member of the Les- islativc Assembly cf- Ontario, died in a. hospital here today. He had been on a visit here with his wife and daughter. Col. Currie had been in ill health for some time. He spent two months in Miami and retiu-ned here a little more than a week ago because of illnas.

Col. John Allister Currie was of- ficer commahding the fifteenth ov- erseas battalion Forty-Eighth High~ lenders. Toronto, led that C. E. F. unit in France and Belgium and was widely known in military and parliamentary circles in Canada. He was elected to the House of Com- mons for North- Simcoe in 1908 and was reelected in i911. and 1917. Lat- er he represented southeast Toron- to and St. Patrick's riding in the provincial legislature of Ontario.

He retired from public life at the end of Sept, 1929. He was born in Ottawa.
