Sir Hector’s Visit.

Coming on an official tour of inspec- tion, it was desirab'e that there should be no political demonstration in honor of Sir Hector ; and there was none. His recep- tion and treatment here were as quiet and unosténtatious as the reception and treat- meat of a popular und powerful Minister could be. The addressee of welcome and, congratulation which he received, were but a spontaneous expression of the people's good will, He was warmly weleomed by his political friends; and fieely approached by his opponents, To all he was effable ; ond gave a diligent ear to every suggestion calculated to promote the welfare of this Province. Though many hours in his company, the writer did not hear him utter a word which could be thought harsh about his political opponents.

It is to be regretted that Sir Hector’s stay was not longer, so that he could at least have visited his compatriots in Rustico, Egmont Bay aod Tignish. But of this his official engagements would not admit, He came to inspect the public works; he did so; he lost ao time. But incidentally he made many friends ; and, it is safe to say, that so far as he is personally concerued, he gained the good will of all with whom he came in contact.

Tue Leader of the Opposition is in New Brunswick. We are glad to hear that he has been well and courteous!y received. Inthe course of time (per- haps fifteen or twenty years) Mr. Blake may be leader of the Government; and then it may be well that he should en- tertain pleasing memories of the Mavri- time Provinces. But independently of his consideration (which we admit con- tains a tinge of seliishuess) we should always kindly entertain strangers. By his followers, Mr. Blake, is certainly, re- garded as a creature of finer mould than ordinary mortals are. Who kuows but that in being hospitable to Mr. Blake, the New Bruoswickers are eutertaining an angel unavares ?

But even though he be an angel. and commence to talk politics, he cannot, in common fairness, complain of being bad- ly treated if opinious, hostile to the powers that be, to. which he may give

utterence, are calle im question and criticized. As tue St. John News pats it:

A rernisie accident eccured in Mon- treal on the 12th instant. A man pvamed Lapointe was working at a loekey engine, which had been used im the discharge of the Dominion line steamer ‘* Teutonia.” The rope whieh had been used for raising ana lowering cargo, with a large heok at the end. was nearly all coiled round the dram, and Lapointe was holding the hook in his hand. Suddenly a picce of lashin gave way, and the drum spun round wi great torce, the hook was dashed out of the man’s handa and entered his head, making & most horrible gash, and tearing eut the brains. The poor fellow was not instant- angously killed, but lived for half an hour afterwards.

The Menetary Conference. belly Av the Monetary Conference in Paris it is generally admitted that grave moue- tary evils exist, that some remedy is urgently needed, and that some of the labours of the conference, such as its ascertainment of the views of StateS’and its collection of materials; have beer of the utmost importance. It is considered that the willipgness expressed by the Bank of England to hold one-fifth of its metallic reserve in silver, provided the other nations open their mints for the free coinage of that metal, is a tacit ad- mission that a great bimetallic union would restore silver to its former place and value as intervational money, and the reasons stated in the resolution of adjournment have a high and yery im-

portant significance.

The French aod American delegates at the Conference have submitted a de- claration, in which they say that the depreciation and great fluctuations in the value of silver relatively to geld, which of late years have shown themselves, aud which continue to exist, have been and are injurious to commerce and general prosperity ; that the establishmeut and maintenance of a fixed relation of value between silver and: gold would produce most impertant benefits to commerce, as would a convention entered into by an important group of States by which they shoald agree to opeu their mints to the free and unlimited coinage of silver and gold at a fixed proportion of weight be- tween gold and silver contained in the monetary unit of each metal, aud with full legal tender ; that the faculty to coin movey thus isaued would cause and maintain stability in the relative value of the two metals suit- able to the interests and requirements ot commerce ; that a ratio now or of late in use by any commercial nation if adopt- ed by such an important group of States could be maintained, but the adoption of the ratio of 153 silver to one gold, would accomplish the principal object with less disturbance in the monetary systems to be affected by it. than any other ratio; that without cousidering the effect which might be produced towards the desired object by a lesser combination of States, a combination which should include Eng- land, France, Germany, and the United States, with the concurrence of the other States, both European and on the American continent, which this combina- tion would ensure, vould be adequate to produce and maintain throughout .the commercial world a relation between the two metals that:such combination should adopt.

Tar Barbadoes Herald, of June 20th, contains the following obituary potice of Capt. Gavin, whose unexpected death we chronicled a few weeks ago. The paragraph shows that he was highly esteemed abroad as well asat home:-—

On Saturday afternoon, the 18th June, 1881, at 5 o'clock, on board of his vessel in Carlisle Bay, after a short illness of four days, Michael WwW. Gavin, aged 38 years, a native of Charlettetoewn, Prince Edward Island. master of the British brigantine Parnell.

‘‘The deceased had been trading to this port for a period of about 14 years, and had earned the esteem and respect of all per- sons acquainted with him. The large con- course of shipmasters: and other friends who attended his remains from Messrs. Da Cesta & Co’s. buildings to the Roman Ca- tholic cemetery, en Sunday afternoon, bore testimony to the great regard in which he was held. Among those, present at his funeral were . members. ef the firm of Messrs. Da Costa & Co. (to whom his yes- sel was consigned), together. with seme of their employes, and also several other mer chants of this city.”

Fearful Murder in the Province of Quebec.

A FEMALE LUNATIC BEATS ANOTHER PATIENT'S BRALNS OUT,

Monvrreat, July 12.

A terrible murder was committed in Longue Point Asylum, yestérday morning, by one of the inmates of the institution named Delia Poirier, who deliberately est the life out of another inmate confined in the same ce!l named Gertrude Roberts. The unfortunate victim was admitted on the first instant, her mental disease being that of deep melan¢holy. She was placed in the same room with her murderess, who was afflicted with religious monomania of a marked character, but was not considered dangerous. Early on Monday morning one of the guardians who waa occupy- img an apartment four cells away was awakened by Poirier singing hymns, but, as this was a custom of hers, no further notice wastaken of itat the time. The singing continuing louder for a much longer period than usual, the nutse got up and proceeding to the cell looked in and saw Poirier stand. ing over her prostrate victim, beating her frantically with a piece of wood three feet long, one inch in thickness, and three inches wide, which she had taken from the ceiling where it had been used for covering a stove-pipe hole. On the nurse entering she found Roberts dead, her skull having been terribly fractured in several places, and her body a mass of cuts and bruises from head to feet. The murderess sat down in a ceraer of the ecll apparently calm and collected. On giving the alarm the superior- ess arrived and she questioned the culprit as te her motive for committing the horri- ble deed. She replied without the least emotion that she dreaded there was a drag on in the cell, and that word had been’ ott her from heaven to kill the beast, and she had dene so. The miideréss is a "native of St. Pie, in this Province, is 25 years of age and single. She is slight and delicately built, with beautiful blende hair, and is exceedingly good-looking. On * being breught before the coroner, she repeated
