NO FURTHER DIMINUTION

There will be no further diminution of the l’rovince’s representation in the Dominion House of Commons. That is‘ settled by the decision of the Dominion Parliament. By the wording of the RNA. Act we were entitled at next. general election to no more than three representatives. As the population of Quebec increased the time would come when we could have claimed no more than one member. and ultimately we should have had no direct representation at all in the House of Commons.

The prospect was not any too reassuring. Sir Wilfrid Lauricr and his advisers have always urged the strict observance of the letter of the law. attd turned a deaf ear to the pleadings of the Island that a gross injustice had been done us by what we contended \vas a clerical error in the drafting of a clause. in the Confederation agreement. Mr .I. .I. Hughes. by his now notorious speech on the subject. (Illl much to damage our claim for the original six members. I'remicr Matlticson, Judge Stewart and Hon. .\. l6. Each party openly admitted what each had known all along. that neither could do business satisfactorily without the goodwill and the hearty cooperation of the other. Each needed the other's help and on this candidly confessed foun- datlou, a new egreement was concluded to the mutual benefit of all concerned.

The incident In mentioned here only to point. out the moral that the good old advice given many hundreds of years ago, to “reason together" in case of misunderstand- ing. has stood and shall stand the test of ages.

We all have our grievances, or think We have. There are many things that, in our opinion, are not just as they ;ought to be and we fume and fret and even suitor under them. Some particular law does not suit: as and we pro- ceed to raise Cain about it instead of going to the law makers and "reasoning together" about the trouble and endeavorlng to find a common ground upon which each 'party can take action for the good of all.

When things go wrong, and so many things have a habit 'of going that way. We proceed at once to blame someone when perhaps the whole trouble, or at least the greater part of It. lies at. our own door. If we, before the fretting and the blaming become chronic, go to those whom we blame and "reason together" with them we shall tlnd in the great majority of cases that it. simple and mutually satis- factory’ solution of tho dilllculty is possible.

The world is growing better. Let us not. forget that. Those who dill'er frotu us in opinions and in methods are not wholly wrong. They too are, in their own way. striv~ iog for the general good. some of them short-sightedly,’ some of them with clearer vision and on a. safe and surer road than that on which we are travelling. In reforming the world. in,which We are all engaged—in our own opin- iou-let as rather take council with tltese others who are working towards the same end but by different methods, rather than antagonize them. Lee as reason together. The world needs improving rattler than reforming, and room for improvement: is infinite. It will take as all our time to keep on improving it and the more We work to- gether the greater will the improvement be.

In this Province today We are. in the opening stages of improvement and development in material things; it will require our united efforts and where the aim is for the bet- terment of all. all should work towards the common goal. Where there are tlitl'erences of opinion as to the methods let. us “reason together" and so arrive at a common line upon which we can all pull together. We are in the midst of a campaign for moral and social reform: necessarily there will be differences of opinion as to methods; let. us reason together knowing that all good men are engaged in the some work. We are in the midst of a war on the outcome of which the life of our country and of ottr Empire depends. Let us not dissipate our energies itt digging for the shortcomings of others who do not see eye to eye with us: let us reason together and so finish the job cretlitablv and so save our country. ‘

The usual "wave of indignation“ has swept and is still sweeping over the civilized world generally and of the British Empire particularly. over the wanton and inhuman murder of innocent men. women anti children by Germans in the sinking of the steamers l’alaba and Aquila, as told in our despatches yesterday morning.

France. 14th March, 1915

Dear Friend Lousonz~Received your very welcome letter and cards to- day. Views are splendid. Well I have written several letters home Iater tie- scrlbing work In the trenches and us well as Icould, so I think I will eontlnu my efforts In this to What is going on behind the trenches. I might say though that we are moving fast in this particular part and in the right direction too. Just on our right' a. gain of about three miles was made the other day and about 1000 Hans gathered in. Well to tell you something of this country and what is happening. This part of France is perfectly level with roads running in all directions very thickly settled. with numerous villages tutti small towns. The houses here are nearly all built of brick with either tile or thatched roofs. Those in the towns mostly tile. while in the farms anti villages thatch is the principal roofing. Farming is confined to doirying and growing of flux. hops and sugar .beets. In

heap of beets are to be found piled up In oblong piles covered with strawand clay.
