When the second of these letters arriv- ed, though Sir John was apperently as well as usual, deeply engrossed by import- ant business and in the full tide of public affairs, I had already with a sinking beart been visited by strange and unusual mis sivings as to the state of his health. It was more from his words end ways of late I had learned to fear, for it seemed to me hat in some mysterious manger the veil if the great hereafter was lifting fer him, snd that his tired eyes saw beyond it.

In her the poor have lost a kind friend, and the Church a generous contri butor. When the erection of the present stately edifice in which the Catholics of Summerside now worship, was under con- sideration, none was more ardent than she, to see the good work go ep, and none labored more zealously in contributing to- wards its final completion. She has now gone to her reward, and leaves to mourn their great loss a sorrowing husband. five daughters, and two sona, the elder of whom, Wilfred J. Gaffney, has already made his mark at the Boston Bar’ as an active and successful young lawyer. To the bereaved family we tender our heart- felt sympathy, in this the hour of their affliction.

In no way can Dr Rossin’s

Notwithstanding all these disadvantages, it ie claimed that, at bis trial, over one | hundred thousand dollars was represented in the persons of his friends and sym- pathizers. How can this be accounted for? He has made all these friends within the past three years. their friendshij, and the bonds of their sympathy are solely Dr. Rossin’s record as a healer of the sick. Can it be possible that this man is wholly ignorant of the science of medicine and surgery? Have all the wonderfully-successful operations, of which we have heard so much, been performed by a nan totally unacquainted with the arrangement of the internal or- gans of the human body? If #0, he can- not in justice be accused of violating any Medical Act. A man who knows nothing of medicine cannot be said to practice medicine. No Medical Act can reach him. His offence, if any, must be under the Criminal Code, which provides for punishing witchcraft, and so forth.

If on the other hand Dr. Rossin’s suc- cess is dueto his medical and surgical skill and not to empirical means, sorcery er witchcraft, is it not fair to assume that the head and front of his offending is that he will not teach his competitors the me- thods of his art or reveal to them the inys- teries of hie profession. They seem to want to examine him, not to test his com- petency, but to enlighten themselves. los- sin objects, and pointing to his patients ex- claims “these are ny diplomas.”

No onecan blame the Medical Society for their position in this case. They wish to protect their industry. Great is Diana of the Ephesians is an old cry, and doctors are proverbially—well conservative. But it may be asked what special interest had the citizens of Charlottetown in this case that they should lend the services of their policeman to the Medical Board. At the in- stance of the prosecutor, invalids from New Glasgow to Lot 48 were brought to Ch’town to tell in court what Dr. Rossin had done for them. The people of Lot 48 at least should be allowed to cling to life and to fight death in their own way with- out the interference of a city official.
