Well we are at the end of this year. If certainly has been an interesting (to say the least) one. There has been a lot of controversy over the newspaper this past semester, and a lot of talk about what is going to be in the paper next year or what is not. This concerns me. There have been a lot of comparisons made in regards to Campus Women and the Backlash page. If there was a closer look taken people would see that there is absolutely nothing to compare.

Campus Women is available for information about situations that affect women in their lives. There have been articles for example on single mothers in univer- sity by Dawn Ambler, women in engineering more than just numbers taken with permission from univer- sity affairs, the rape and sexual assault supplement, birth control; the pill,, and an article on breast cancer to name some of the articles which have appeared in Campus Women. There were also twO articles which appeared that did receive more attention than any other articles that have been in Campus Women. If men could have babies, this article offended some menoncampus. Men didn’t find it funny, Why? This article was a sarcastic look at what would happen if things were reversed. If menon campus didn’t find it funny all I can say is women don’t find their lives funny either. Think about it. When was the last time you heard a joke making fun of women. Maybea blonde joke? The other article was about male birth control called Umbrellie. This also was a sarcastic look at how things would be reversed. Men also found this offensive and I feel bad about the persons brother who dies from cancer, but women are dying everyday related to birth control, some who even loose the opportunity of having children and I don’t find that funny. If those two articles offended you (male or female) than J think you should be working for changes in our society. This includes especially the equality of women.

The editors of the Backlash page in Peter Hanus’s words ‘‘was to give an opposite opinion of what was already in the paper.’’ ‘‘The paper has been one sided to long.’’ Well this is the last issue of the paper; I

have not seen an article on breast cancer in men, single fathers at UPEI, OR an article onmen ina field dominated by women. Come to think of it the Backlash page has not written to much opposite what has been written on Campus Women. They wrote an article on sexual harrasement which is notreally opposite to the rape and sexual assault supplement but as Close as the Backlash Page has ever come to being the written opposite of the Campus Women’s page. The ideas or philosophies behind the two pages are indeed opposite. I really doubt that I (personally) could agree with Mr. Hanus or Mr. Murphy oN any- thing but that has little to do with Campus Women.

There has been mention of the two pages at Student Council meetings and if they should be allowed inthe. paper. I don’t think that anything that promoted : hatred should be written. I realize there are a lot of j different views on censorship on campus, my personal view is that you should protect everyone, every group _ of people. If Campus Women wrote articles that : promoted the hatred of men, then it shouldn’tbe published although you won’tsee that fora while, I will be back next year and I don’t agree with promot- ing the hatred of any group that includes those who promote that hatred of feminists or women. Think about this for a moment. For those of you who were here last year how many letters to the editor dealt : with Campus Women? Three. Before Christmas how. many letters to the editor, Four. Three dealt with the ~ article ‘‘If Men Could Have Babies.’’ Nowthink about this. when did ‘‘all this feminist garbage.”’ start? With Cory’s editorial about feminists. His editorial sparked a response from feminists oncam- — pus and those who support the equality of women bu 7 who don’t call themselves feminists.
