The English Language.

All understand that our English language derives its phraseology, more or less, from other languages; but few probably are aware how large a proportion of its words are of Anglo-Saxon origin. According to the Edinburg Reve, however, which supposes the Enytish language has some forty thou- sand words (inciuding radicals and deriva- tives), about tive-sixths of all these words are of Anglo-Saxon origin. And according to French, if the English language were divided into a hundred parts sixty would be Anglo-Saxon, thirty of Latin origin (in-

The Anglo-Saxon is not so much one of the
elements of the English language as its
very foyndation or basis. Let anyone try
ta compose a sentence of but ten or twelve
words of only Latin derivation, and it will
be found difficult, if not impossible to do
it, while, on the other hand, if we except
the topics of theology, philosophy, etc.,
whole pages might be written on almost
any evbject, especially on matters pertain-
ing to common, every-day life, every word of which might be of Saxon origin,
without the least appearance of awkward-
ness or stiffness in the expression.
In fourteen pages taken from Shakespeare, Milton, Cowley, Thomson, Addison, Spen- ser, Locke, Pope, Young, Swift, R»obert- son, Hume, Gibbon and Jobnson, having in all fourteen hundred and ninety-six words, all but two hundred and ninety-two words, says the Edinburgh Review, are Saxon, the proportion in some of the ex- tracts being over two-thirds, and in others more than nine-tenths from the Saxon. And if we take these extracts asa fair test, the Saxon would constitute about four- fifths of the English language.
"As to the relative proportion and im- portance of the Norman and Saxon ele- ments in the English, it is noticeable that almost all the words of dignity, honor, state and pre-eminence (with one remark- able exception) come from the Norman as the conquering race. Such, for ezample, are the words sovereign, sceptre, throne, roy- uty, homage, prince, dnke, count, treasurer, chanceilor, palace, castle, hall, dome, and a multitude of others. The remarkable ex- ception, already alluded to, is the word king, showing that the chieftain of the con- quering race came in, not by a new title, and as overthrowing a former dynasty, but as assuming to be in the rightful ling of sue- cession, so to conciliate thé subject people,
‘}aen, again, what some one has called ‘the statlier superstructure cf the lan- guage’ —articles of luxury, words that have todo with the chase, with chivalry, with personal adornment, etc., are of Norman origin throughout, while the great features of Nature, the sun, moon, stars, earth, fire, water, and such social relations as those of father, mother, husband, wife, son, daughter, etc., are Saxon—the palace and castle may have come from the Norman, but to the Saxon we owe the familiar and dearer names of house, home, roof, hearth, ete.
So, again, the instruments for cultivating the earth and gathering in its products— the plow, sickle, flail, spade, hoe, etc., are from the Saxon,'as also such words as wheat, rye, oats, barley, and the names of

Avsany, N. Y., July 9—A special from Johnstown, N. Y.. thig evening, reports that heavy rain has been falling since early this afternoon. The downpour has caused the Cayudatta Creek to burst its bounds. Two dams gave way and the torrent tock

On a bridge cressing the creek viewing the food were 30 or 40 people. The torrent took the bridge from its foundations, hurl- ing the peeple into the seething torrent be- neath. At this writing it is impossible to ascertain the number saved. It ig believed many perished.
Wiynirza, July $.—It is raining here to- day and at various points throughout the Province. It was showery last night and this morning throughout Manitoba and the territories west to Regina. The rains that have fallen within the past ten days were of very great benefit to the growing crops.

Dr. Barrow says we ought to cherish the strongest ‘** resentment ” toward God ; for sentiment then meant love, and as God cherishes the strongest sentiment of love to us, we ought to cherish the strongest re-seutiment or re- turn of love to Him. And Jeremy Taylor says: ‘* Humility is a duty in great ones” (i. ¢., in men of high rank and holding office), ** as well as in idiots” (i. ¢., men in

Tue Orrer Deciixep.—A Minneapolis, Minn., despatch says that asa result of the recent remarkable performance of the three- year-old trotting horse Axtell at Minnehaha, Robert Bouner of New York telegraphed te the owner of the animal that he would pay $65,000 tor him. Mr. Williams refused to accept the price offered.
Tur Money Invo.tyep.—The amount of money involved in the recent Suilivan-Kil- rain battle was enurmous. The stakes were $20,000, the 700 inner cirele tickets in- crease the sum $10,500, and the 2,000 spectators at $10 each add $20,000 more tu the amount, making a grand total of $50, - 500, an amount unheard of in the history of thering. The managers of the affair will not fare very badly, as they get a good percentage of the receipts from the sale of tickets. Sullivan gets the bulk of the money. Richard K. Fox, Kilrain’s prin- cipal backer, is out about $20,000,

North River School Examination,
The half-yearly examination of the Lower North River School was held on the 27th ult, There was a good attendance of pupils, and a number of visitors were pre- sent. The classes were examined by Mr. Lawson, the teacher of the school, and by Messrs. Trowan and Bain, and they all ex- hibited commendable proficieney in their studies. The admirable reading and spell- ing of the junior classes were noticeable, {while the elder scholars did themselves much credit in their examination in the higher branches of arithmetic, and in geometry, history and English composition, Mr. Henry Lawson has been for six years teacher of this schvol, and during the whole period has won himself much credit by his diligent, faithful and suecessfnl attention

DIED, At DeSable, on Thursday, the 4th inst., of paralysis, Mary Campbell, aged 65 yeare Deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Alexander Campbell, DeSabie, and was much respected and esteemed for her many amiable quanties.

At No, 3 Hayburn Crescent, Patrick, Scot- land, on the 11th ult., Hon. James Duncan, aged 78 years. For many years Mr. Dunean carried on an extensive business in shipbuild- ing in P. K, Istand, and was for some years a member of the Loval Legislature of the Province, being in the Executive Council for a time.
At Dorchester, N. B., on the 3rd inst., John Palmer, aged 100 years, 8° months, 25 days. The deceased was a veteran of the war of 1812. He served with his company at Fort Cumberland, and afterwards did barracks duty at St. John.
