Aut Asout a Cow.—The meanest man in the world is named Brown, and he lives at Moberly, Mo. He sold his neighbor Jones a half interest in a cow, and then refused tu divide the milk, maintaining that Jones owned the front part of the cow. The cow recently hooked Brown, and now he is suing Jones for damages.

For CLeniymen Oxty.—A leading clerry- yan of Louisville wag suddenly called away, and a substitute preached to his congregation. The substitute had no sermon ready, and he used one of the regular minister's manuscripts. The tracings on the margin kept him smiling all through a deep and serious discourse, muck to the wonder of the congregation. Among other notes were, ‘“‘ bite lip bitterly,” ‘‘ ex- treme agitation,” ‘‘ pious smile” and ‘loud ringing voice.

Nor Lmettovs.—A Montreal man named Laplante sued another man named Parenteau fur calling him an ‘‘informer inconnection with certain liquor cases. The superior court grant- ed $25 damages, but the court of review, on the 29th ult., reversed the decision, Judge johnson remarking that the expression was jot in itself an offensive one. ‘The term was one used in law, and the function of informer, though net always meeting with the public favor, was one authorized te law.

Godfrey, the cham: pion colored heavy-weight of the New Engiana States, wasthe victor in the glove contest with Wannop, the celebrated Knglish boxer and wrestler, knocking him out in six rounds. Godfrey, it will be remembered, a few weeks ago fought a draw with Joe Lannon, who was knocked out by Jack Ashton, at Providence, R. L, on Saturday, as stated in Tux Ex- AmMINER of yesterday. Orrawa, April 2. this afternoon, before y, Sir Richard Cartwright called the attention of the Finance Minis- ter to what he believed to be the sericus consequences of statements in the pros- pectus of the late three per cent. loan nego- tiated by the High Commissioner in Lon- don. Instead of a fifty years’ three per cent, loan, according to his reading of the redemption clause it was payable in ten annual instalments.

Hon. Mr. Foster, who was absent from the House yesterday when notice was given of this matter, stated that he would communicate with the High Commissioner and furnish the desired information at the earliest possible hour.

New York, April 2, Six sailors appeared before United States Commissioner Shields to-day and charged Capt. Hockster and Bridge and Campbell of the bark St. Andrew, of St. John, with murdering Elias Neilson, a | Norwegian sailor of the crew. The Captain | and two mates with spikes, jand knocked: him down with blocks of wood. He died on March 20th, and was buried at sea. The captain and two mates were placed on trial.

Despatches from all parts of the country show that seeding operations are progress- ing rapidly. Notwithstanding interruption by the late cold spell, the area will be much larger than last year, in many places being from 75 to 100 per cent. greater.

Mr. Freperic Viturers, the talented war artist and correspondent of the London Grapic, delivered his second lecture in this city, in the Y. M. C. A. Hall last evening. His subject was, ‘* Here, There and Every- where.” There was a fair audience present. Brigade-Major Irving presided. Mr. Villiers began his discourse by relating his early experience as an artist, showing specimens of his work and telling how he came to be engaged as the artist and cor- respondent of the Graphic. He then took his audience through the Turko-Servian war of 1876, the Bulgarian campaign of 1877, the Afghanistan war of 1879 and_ the Egyptian war of 1882. The Servo-Bulgare and Burmah campaign of 1886 was also dwelt upon. The stories of life both on the field and in the camp were well told, and the different pictures shown to much better advantage than on the preceding evening.

Infidelity Abroad.

Srir,—There is wickedness among us. Two men oi middle age, who appeared to be intelligent, were found incapable of taking an oath in our County Court. The Judge rightly admonished them, and, as you say, here is room for home evangeli- zation. The men should be ashamed of themselves. You have put them in the moral pillory, Mr. Editor, and thus cleared your soul, and warned others of the pollution. Why, these men could enter our Stipendiary’s court almost any day of the year, and see mere youths, without too much appearance of intelligence, for all that quite capable of tal:ing an oath. Wit- nesses in Scott Aci casee have nu difficulty iu accepting the ‘(rinity, the inspiration of the Bible and other doctrines; they can swallow these things—swallowing is now natural to them. Let Mr. Stewart move to town. Let him settle in Water or Lower Pownal Street; and there will be some hope of him. But alas, that such things should be possible among us.
