Deak Sirn,— Fort Augustus proper has yet to subscribe the amount of one hundred acres which is stated to have been—sub- scribed by your correspondent ** Progress ” However, let that puss, It is only one of the many erroneous statements this would- be Fort Augustus ‘ Progressor” has sent to press. He says ‘‘the prac ical and en- prising farmers of Fort Augustus proper are fully alive to the importance of a Starch Factory at Duffy’s Creek.” it would, indeed, be a very importavt thing to some of the great farmers of Fort Augustus proper. lt was decided at G) nfinnan meeting that apy person who would busy lomself in pointing out a site, bis name wes to be cut off from the list of tubscribers. It is said that the military mind in Russia is thoroughly alarned at the work being rushed along the Rvsso-German frontier by the German Gverrment. The Ger men fortress on that frontier are being vastly strengihened, and stra'egical reil- ways are being repidly constructed to con- nect them with ezch other and with the interior strongholds of the empire. Ger- many appears to be providing the meaos for a rapid rush into Russian Poland with an overwhelming force in case of need. The Russian Generals, recollecting the rével- atio eof the Prussian Anstrian campaign of 1866, and the Franco German wer of 1870-1, are uneasy at the masterly preparations yoing on along Germany's northern and northeastern frontier. The struggle be- ‘ween the two great military empires must come some day. Russia must riek it or be content t» pause in its conquering career. Germany docs well to prepare for it in good rime.
