Shawn Younis greeted me with a chocolate chip cookie and a smile as I walked into his office and it was at that moment that my agenda for this article began to shift. I had intended to cleverly yet gently dismiss past choices for musical guests and per- haps even surreptitiously insert some suggestions of my own. Instead, I find myself both impressed with Shawn’s ability to handle his position so early on and disappointed in my- self in that I was so quick to criticize when I had never ventured to actu- ally speak to someone constructively about the music at the Wave.

the Wave in September, I had always believed that objectively bad taste in music was non-existent. Although

I stand by that, I know now that people are indeed being represented: those who speak up. It just hap- pens to be that those who speak

up unfortunately like objectionable music. Although Shawn was unable to provide me with numbers, he as- sures me that this is the best semes- ter that the Wave has seen in years.

I believe him- although my nights

at the Wave have been very limited, there have been a lot of people there on those few occasions. Looking

up at the various bands to grace the stage, I couldn’t help but ask myself: why? Well, the growing number of students living across the street may have something to do with it- it’s easier to walk across the street than to pay cab fare or assign a designated

driver. And the staff is lovely- the bouncers have been nothing but kind to me and the serving and bartending staff are fantastic. Lastly, and incred- ibly conveniently, it’s cheap. The most prominent problem with the Wave is the music- and that’s entirely fixable. Perhaps you have seen Shawn around the student centre, talking to various students about who they would like to see come to the Wave- this is how he has gotten suggestions in the past. Upon suggestion that there be a more formal method of surveillance which would allow for a more broad coverage of students, Shawn assured me that measures were already being taken: “We’re hit- ting e-mail and Internet mediums. We had someone come in and update all of the Student Union pages so they should be up and running really soon. We are going to have online polls to

see what it is that people want.” Shawn would also like it to be known that his door is always open for people to come to him person- ally about what it is they would like to see happen at the Wave.

I write this article having learned three things, which I find to be of moderate significance. First, Shawn Younis is lovely and it is apparent now how he came to win the recent election. Second, although many musical tastes aren’t represented at the Wave, there is no evidence of accusations or even sugges- tions from the aforementioned in favour of representing the excluded tastes. With that said, speak up (to someone with influence). Thirdly, even I can make better chocolate chip cookies than the people at the Superstore, which would admittedly imply that they have some work to- do.
