Thus ended the Supreme Court trial of 21-year-old Roger Clar- ence M‘acLean charged with the July 27th “murder” of his step- father, Walter Ross, 52, of 0r- well.
The verdict came one and a half hours after the jury deliber- ated following addresses by both the crown, defence counsel and the charge of Mr. Justice Mark

Throughout the three-day trial
the charge against MacLean was
referred to by Defence Counel J.O.C. Campbell, Q.C., as a “dreamed up charge by the At- torney-General" an opinion that many seemed to agree with as

rolled by the 20 crown witnesses and four witnesses for the de- fence.
Evidence for the prosecution was completed on Thursday even- ing while the defence completed its case on Friday morning, bas- ing most of its case on the story given by MacLean and three wit- nesses who testified as to the accused‘s "solid" character.
The chief witness for the de- fence was the accused. Roger MacLean went on the stand at about 10.45 am. yesterday morn- ing and stepped down about one hour later after being examin- ed by J. O. C. Campbell, Q.C., defence counsel and cross-ex- amined by Crown Prosecutor J. P. Nicholson.

The meeting opened with a welcome from Miss Dorothy Cul- len, provincial librarian. follow- ed by a summary of happenings of the past year. Changes in staff at headquarters and in [the branches were mentioned. Note- worthy events included the mov- ing of the Kensington library, ‘he filming of the P.E.I. Librar- ‘35 Catalog by the National Lib- rary at Ottawa, and the open- ing of the library at Birchwood High School.
Miss Cullen gave 'a talk on a librarian’s reading and how it can benefit both the librarian and library users. Recalling that the public library has bean call- ed “a people’s university" she urged that the librarian should be the first graduate.
Reading of books and magaz- ines on library work was stres- sed and: several books in this field were recommended. Point- ing out the need for more pro— motion of adult reading, Miss Cullen suggested ways of mak- ing one‘s own reading a medium for the spread of interest in

“We finished work about 4.15 p.m. that Saturday and Ivan. Aus- tin Stuart and I went to Cardi— gan and picked up 12 cans of beer each. After that we returned to Wood’s house.
“I went home to change out of my working clothes about 8.30 p.m. I took Ivan’s truck and vuhen I returned we both went to Char- lottetown and spent most of our tfme at the Legion Carnival. We started for home about 12.30 em. on Sunday, arriving at my place between 12.45 and 1 o'clock.
“When I went into, the house there was noboddy up. My mother was in bed and so were the two younger kids. (Both are Ross’ children through his marriage to Roger MacDean's mother). I tookvof my coat and put the three cans of beer‘in the pantry on a table. There were six beer left and Ivan and I divided them.
“We didn’t have any other li- quor during the night than the beer. '
“I had been back and forth to Ontario about three or four times, the longest stay was about a year. During that time I worked mostly in a lumber yard. When at home I worked on a farm. AT STOVE
“I went right to bed and was awakened about 2 am. when I heard somebody rattling around the kitchen stove.
“About two years ago I heard the same sound and when I went down stairs saw my steplfather (Walter Ross) near the stove. The wood box in front of the stove was on fire and nearby was a jar of gas. He always started the fire that way--using gas. I dragged

“That was the only other time I had heard him trying to start the stove.
“When I went down this time I put on my jeans and a shirt. I had my socks on. He (Ross was sitting on the couch in the kit- chen. The fire was going.
“ He asked me for a drink and I offered him a beer. He also asked for the bottle of rum. I gave him this to. There was a pint bottle of rum on the table with about a half-inch in it. We didn’t say anything. I finished off my tin and went into the pantry and got another tin.
“I was about halfway through (I drank the first one fast) when he asked me to get something to eat. I told him that it was late and suggested that he lie down and get some sleep.
“I noticed him tip the rum bot— tie up and then I turned towards the window, thinking I had seen car lights coming towards the house. I didn’t.

“He threw the bottle and it hit somewhere in the vicinity of the door leading to the porch. I turn- ed around and saw him coming at me with his fist closed and his arm drawn back as if he was going to 'hit me. I hit him first with my fist on the jaw.
“He fell to the floor, hitting the leaf of the table as he went.

The monthly meeting of the P.E.I. Hospital Nurses’ Alumni was held at the Cundall Home on October 17, with the president, Mrs. Wilfred James in the chair. The meeting opened by repeat- ing the Lord's Prayer in Unison. Reports were received from var- ious Committees, and routine business transacted.
A pleasing feature of the meet~ ing was the presentation of the Alumni prize to Miss Dorothy Coffin, who led the Island in the recent R.N. examinations. Congratulations were also ex— tended to Mrs. Wendell Wood on her recent appointment as Dir- ector of Red Cross Nursing Ser- lvices. Miss Verna Darrach then outlined briefly the work of that Department.
