It is pleasing to note that at least one Maritime Liberal news-

paper has refused to lend itself to the subversive propaganda adopted iby its warty members. We refer to the Halifax Chronicle, which on Tuesday carried the following edi- torial under the heading “Radio Paying It: Way." We quote the edi- torial in full:

Dr. R. A. Barlow, Rochester, N. Y., believes that the elcctrocogulation method requires more care, judg- ment and skill, than docs the usual surgicul method, The danger is that in an effort to lessen the number of visits to the surgeon's office, and the natural endeavour to get the in- footed tonsils completely removed as soon as possible, too much tonsil tis- sue is often destroyed at the one time resulting in pain, and con- sidcrublc delay, before the next coagulation of tissue can be done, By blanching or destroying a nurn- bcr of small parts of the tonsils and letting these small parts gradually join one another, this over coagula- tion may be prevented.

If the patient has had a number of attacks of tonsiilitls or quinsy (abscess of the tonsil) and under- goes the eicctrccoagulation method for removing tonsils, it sometimes happens that he may develop an- other attack of quinsy. The point hcre of course is that this method should not be used too soon after an atiuck of tonsilliiis or quinsy.

Dr. F. B. Balmcr, Chicago, says that this method cannot replace the surgical mcthod—removal by the knife. Surgery will continue to be the method used in the majority of cases: that is where there is no par- ticular reason why the clectrocula- tiou method shoud be used.

However, in Dr. Baimcrs opin- ion, clcctroccagulotion is best suited for certain cases. It is a safe meth- od but requires time, judgment, skill, patience and the most extreme cure.

A Dangerous Practice

A number of correspondents have written to thc Star recently com- plaining about the danger caused by the general practice oi using ordnary commercial trucks to con- vey large picnic parties into the courtry cu Saturdays and Sun- days. Already several States in the United States have legislated against it and the long and stead- ily growing list of accidents in this Province suggests that the proper authorities ought t: take the mat- ter in hand here.

Very seldom are these trucks properly equipped for the purpose oi seating a score or more cf hu- man beings. Planks are laid cross- ways, or in muy cases ordinary chairs which shift easily are used. The number to be carried is ap- parently only limited by the phy- sical possibility of crowding people aboard. The consequence of this carelessness is a truck so loaded that the centre of gravity is much higher than it should bc-it is not unusual to see two or three par- ticularly adventurous pioneers perched on the top of the driver's cub—and so mucl1 more easily up- set on curves than it would be with a load carried as the design- er of the machine intended. The result of all this is trucks packed with people upset at curves, break- ing through bridges or collding on nnrrow roads. Collisions with such machines are the terror of the dri- vcr in an ordinary pleasure car. Insured us commercial trucks. these machines arc rented out as buses for picnics and the truck in- surarce, it has been argued, does not apply to them when so used. An accdcn-t where one of these bus trucks is involved, therefore, leaves the other party unable to rccover by the ordinary insurance method, a. civil action for dama- ges being the only recourse.

Sin-l have read with deep inter- est Chief Justice Mathiesoifs pleas- ant and graphic accounts oi his re- cent travels in Great Britain. I am sure that he has a good deal more to tell us and there are many who would welcome his observations in some more permanent form. Of es- pecial interest were his references to the old grey town at the mouth of the River Ness-the end cf Nell Munro's Road to the North and the heart of romance in the North Countree. Two of the happiest years of the writer's boyhood were spent in the royal burgh of Inver- ness. And, surely, if Beauty draws her mantle across the Scottish highlands, it is there, when the gleaming fails upon the Castle Hill, and the lights, magic faery lights, begin to beckon from the islands in the river, and, in the wooded darkness the pipes are cry- ing, crying out the ancient Celtic sorrow for the days and the lads that are no more, no more at all. Dne remembers the road to Tom-na- hurich, the loftlest cemetery in Bri- tain, where they say (and of course you believe), the “wee folk" come out and dance between the mossy stones when the moon and the hour come together. One remembers gar- dens oi delight with gooseberries, enormous, gargantuan, and sweet as the honey of I-Iymettus. One re- members, too, the Northern Meet- ings when the beauty and the chiv- alry and the brawn and skill of the North are gathered together; the color, the movement, the swirl of the kllt: the chiefs of the 811016110 clans, MacKintosh of Moy, Grant 01 Seafleld, Lovat of the Frasers, Cam- eron of Lochell, men of the oldest blood in Europe, some with titles and. some plain esquires; and the deeds of the athletes on the meadow with hammer and cabcr. The record, a pro- iessional one, can be verified easily enough. THE OPENING or This itchy noon

Sli',-—Il‘i my previous letter I gave a short outline of the history of Jubilees or Holy Years and a short explanation of their meaning. The Jubilee of 1933 is now in 910F955 and I trust that your readers will be interested in the following ac- count of the opening ceremonies. An ordinary Holy Year is begun by a ceremony called the Oberlin! of the Holy Door. This ceremony usually accompanies only the open- ing of the ordinary ones but, on ac- count of the solemn anniversary commemorated by the present Jubi- lee, the Holy Father decreed that the doors should be opened. In the ordinary course of events they would not have been opened until 1050. There are four holy doors and they are culled “holy" on account of the relation they have to those years of Jubilee which bring . so many spiritual graces to all. The? consist simply of the solid block of masonry with which the openings were walled up at the end of the previous Jubilee. They are just the concrete walls which close up the four doors and are not ornamented in any way save for a silver cross placed in the centre of each one. These crosses become, during the years between Jubllees, shiny and worn from the kisses of those enter- ing the churches. ‘This act of piety is" a. mark of respect and devotion to Our Lord who, by His death on the Cross, brought redempt on to man, the grace of which flows abundantly into souls during the years when the doors are opened. The doors are in iour of the ma- jor baslllcas, St. John Lateran, St. Peters, st. Mary Major and St. Paul's, outside the walls. These are the churches to which the visits must be made in order to gain the Indulgences attached to the Jubilee.
