Success in Life.

GENERAL LORD WOLSELY’S VIEWS UPON AN INTERESTING SUBJECT.

General Lord Welsely, in a recent lecture to young men, which by the way, was his first sppearance on the public platform as a lecturer,in a chatty manner, in which many anecdotes of personal experience were grapbileally introduced, gave his hearers some advice

on the qualities necessary for success in life. Among other things he suid :— Courage was only another word for determination, and was quite as indis

pe nsible to the civilian as to the soldier. They had the advantage before them of studving the lives of the great men in| history,whose deeds they should try and emulate so as to leave the mark of their! “footprints in the sand ef time,” and their lives a sign-post in the thorny path | of life, (Cheers.) While they could not | all attain eminence, anybody with deter-| miuatien and dogged courage was bound | tosecure ap ample competence in life. Lord Wolsely warmly defended the} general good cliarecter of the army, the | eonductot which, if taken man to man, compared favorably with any class of society, an l expressed the belief that if drunkenness could be eliminated crime would be practicaliy at an end. In the Red River expedition, which was one of the hardest compaigns he was ever 1p, | there was no strong liquor,and there was likewise no sickness, and not a prisoner allthrough., He did not wish to lecture! them on temperance, or to recommend from a moral or spiritural standpoint | —that he left toothers—but be would} regommend it on the ground of ex- pediency. If two boys started together | in life, all things been equal, with the} exception of ond drinkingand the other being a teetotaller, it was long odds on the latter. (Cheers. )

Eiffects of Shocks on Eggs.

It is a common belief amovg persons who keep poultry, that the shocks aod tremors to which eggs are subject dar- ing transport on road or railway aff ct the germ contained inthe egg. M. Dareste, who has been studying this matter, found, a few years ago, that ip eggs submitted to incubation directly atter arailway journey, the embryo very generally died; but afew days rest before incubation obviated this. He has lately inquired into the effect of shocks on the fecundated egg-germ, with the aid of a tapotuse, or machine used by chocolate-makers to force the paste into the mills; it gives 120 blows a minute. Monstrosities were always the result of the tremors so caused. This cause is the more remarkable that it acts before the evolution of the em- bryo, whereas the other causes M. Dar- este has indicated, as elevation of lowering of temperature, diminution of porosity of the egg-shell, the vertical position of the egg, and anequal heat. ing, only modify the embryo during its evolution. The modification impres- sed on this germ by those shocks did not dissappear after rest, asin the case mentioned above, butit is not kaown why. A few eggs escape the action.

Beer at a Church Fair.

The Elm Street Presbyterian Church of Paterson, N. J., recently held a fair, and at it beer wassold. The Presby- tery of Jersey City, being informed of the fact, adopted the following minute, a copy of which was sent to the offend- ing congregation:—

‘The Presbytery of Jersey City has heard with extreme regret that, at a fair recently held by the Elm Street German Presbyterian Chureh of Paterson, la- ger beer was publicly sold; and that even a license held by a saloon keeper was transferred to the place of the fair in order that the business might be conducted under color of law, while the proceeds were to go to the benefit of the chureh.

“Presbytery here expresses its re- probation ot the action asa reproach not only ou the church, and congrega- tion immediately concerned, but also upon all churches of our commanion.

“Still further in the opinion of Pres- bytery, stich enterprises as fairs ought by no means to be attempted unless they can be sustained without resert to any devices that are questionable in morality.”
