Hockey Panthers Sweep Weekend

It was quite a weekend for the UPEI Hockey Pan- thers as they moved into the third week of AUAA Hockey play. On Friday evening the Panthers exploded with six second period goals to overcome a 2-1 deficit and trounce UNB 8-2.

Saturday’s game looked as though it was going to be a laugher for the Pan- thers as they jumped up 3- 0 after one period against St.Thomas. However the Thommies who always play well against the Panthers, fought back to trail by only one goal (5-4) after two peri- ods. The two teams traded third period goals as UPEI held on for a 6-5 victory _ anda sweep of their weekend ~ games in New Brunswick.

Coach Vince Mulligan was pleased to come home this weekend with four points considering the trouble that St.Thomas has given them the past cou- ple of years. The Panthers arrived home in first place in the AUAA MacAdam Di- vision just two points ahead on the Universite de Monc- ton Blue Eagles, who won both of their weekend games to turn their record from 1- 2 to a more respectable 3- 2 record. This weekend the Panthers are in Nova Scotia to play Kelly Division pow- erhouse Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday and an improved Acadia Axemen club on Sun- day. Next weekend the Pan- thers return home to the Charlottetown Forum to play the University of Cape Bre- ton Capers. SSS

This year was definitely a rebuilding year for the Panthers as there were alot of new faces on the team. These new faces still learning to play together.

Panther Teams:

Have Strong Weekend

The men’s and women’s | basketball teams have both gotten off to a great starts this year. Both teams have been in action over the past two weekends with tremen- dous outcomes. ~

The Lady Panthers started their season off with two victories over the Uni- versity of Cape Breton Ca- pers and then travelled to Laval, Quebec for a_tour- nament last weekend. Al- though they lost the champi- onship game by three points the. weekend was very suc- cessful for the Panther ladies.

Led by tournament all- stars Stephanie Smith and Tracey MacEach- ern, the Lady Panthers made it to the final game defeat- ing Brock University 73-57. Stephanie Smith scored 17 points and Tracey MacEach- ern scored 18 in the vic- tory. In the Championship Game Smith and MacEach- ern were again the big guns scoring 19 and 12 points re- spectively. Other Panther scorers were Ria Bahadurs- ingh 8, Janet Nichols and Stephanie Knickle both had 4, Susan Knickle and Tracey Bowie had two point perfor- mances.

The men’s team is also off to a great start. After two victories in Quebec two weeks ago they travelled to

Wolfville, Nova Scotia for the annual Acadia tip-off tour- nament. The Panthers de- feated St.Mary's 79-76 on Saturday to: advance>to: the final game and a showdown with arch-rival Acadia. After jumping to a quick 16-9 lead early in the first half the Pan- thers, in serious foul trou- ble, saw Acadia rally back to take a 55-44 lead to the

dressing room. In the second © half the Panthers used their strong, stubborn defense to shutdown Acadia while their offense nipped away at Aca- dia’s lead finally tying the score with a little under four minutes to play. Two foul shots by Delroy Adams and a layup by Brett Wood gave the Panthers the lead which

they never relinquished win-

ning the game 96-89 and the tournament. Panther scorers included Peter Gordon 32, Steve Ruiz 25, Delroy Adams 14, Mark Roberts 13, Brett Wood 6, and Tom MacSwig- gan with 2.

Both Basketball teams are in action this weekend as the Lady Panthers travel to Fredericton to play in the UNB Tournament while the Men’s team is at home for a pair of games against Hus- son College from Maine. The games on Friday-and Satur- day night are both 7:00pm starts at the Alumni Gym. So let’s go out and cheer our team on this weekend for two more victories. om
