The last he had seen of Leaper he had made a long leap into the water and Longiegs the i-Icron. who had all but caught him. had given up in disgust and flown off toward the Big River.

After a while the young Chip- munk came out of hiding. Some- what fearfully. for this was a strange Dlilvf‘, n very strange place, he went over where he could look all over the Smiling Pool. Citrarid- father Frog was sitting on his big. green lily pad where he had been mvhen Lonziegs came tn the Smil- iing Pool. hut lmtlpﬂ‘ was nowhere ‘to be seen. For a couple of minutes he remain- ed right there. without moving

___ clearly for quite a way out from the bank. Some queer folks of different sizes, but. all with fst al- most round bodies and wiggling tails. were moving about close to the bottom. The young Chipmunk wondered who they were. I sus- pect that liad~any one told him that those were Frog children he wouldn't have believed it. for they didn't look the tiniest bit like Frogs. But they were. all but the very small black ones. These were Toad Babies. All were Tadpoles or Pollywogs, whichever name you like best.

At a certain spot the soft mud of the bottom began to stir. Little Stripes rubbed his eyes. He was sure something must be wrong with them. for there was his Frog friend coming right out of the mud. He came right up to the surface of the water until his goggly eyes on top of his head xvere out of water. and only those. For a couple of min- utes he remained right there with- out moving. Those goggiy but bright eyes were carefully looking all around to make sure that no danger was in sight. '.'i‘hen those long. strong hind legs with blg webbed feet that had kicked him through the air in such long leaps. began kicking him through the wa- ter straight to where his friend “'35 sitting.

"So you are still around." ssld Leaper as he hopped out of the wa- ter and up the bank.

"Yes," replied Little Stripes. "And you’re still around. I'm glad of that. I was afraid you might riot be. I couldn't see you in the water anywhere."

"I was down in the mud. Of course you couldn't see me," replied the pretty Leopard Frog in the most matter-of-fact tone. just as

that since his partner had passed originally. a game was virtually out of the tiuestioii for his side. and therefore that his best chance for a substatiiial profit was to kcep quiet and try to trap the op- ponents.

He should have started with one heart. so thnt. he could show his diamond suit without "reversing". Over North's one spade response. There are no holes down there." “Then how could you go into the mud out of sight if there was no hole in it?" demanded the puzzled young Chipmunk. Leaper chuckled. "I guess you don't know much about mud." said he. and that was s. perfectly good guess. for Little Stripess short life had been spent where the ground was dry arid sandy- "That muol is too soft to make holes in. All I dolls push myself down in it and it closes over me." "But how can you breaths?" cried. Little Strips. "I don't breathe. to." replied the Frog, "Oh!" said Little Stripes. and again “Ohi" “How long can you stay there without breathing?" "As long as I want to.” replied Leaper. Then he chuckled. "Old Iongiegs didn't get me for his breakfast, but he made a. good try. He aivi ays does." said he. "D0 you mean he has tried be- fore to catch you?“ cried the wide- eyed young listener. “More times than I can remem- ber. I Jump for life like that every day. often several times in a day. If it isn't Longlegs it is some one else. There ls always some one looking for us Frogs. A day in which I didn‘t have to do s little jumping would be a dull day." replied the trim young Frog carelessly, quite as if Jumping for life was a matter of course.
