An O_p Restpext Deap.—The Moncton Times says: John Crossman, the oldest resi- dent of Steeves Mountain, died on the 5th June, aged 85 years. He was one of a family of 14 children, eight brothers and six sisters. Three . sisters and three brothers are stiil liv- ing. He was twice married and leaves a widow, 15 children, 83 grand childrea, and 27 great yrand-children

Western Excurston.—To those of our towns folk who have not yet visited the Wes;, we would say that no better opportunity can offer than the grand excursion to the tea at Bloomfield Station, advertised in another column for 15th Jaly. The excursion is so cheap, that anyone can afford it, the country is now so beatttifal that everyone will enjoy it, and Father Burke's reputation for success- full teas so well established, that this one may be looked upon as a grand affair.

Wicerns Acaix.—Professor Wiggins has got another scare for the public. He says southern Kurope, especially italy, wiil be vis- ited with disastrous earthquakes this summer, owing to the peculiar conjunction of the planets, The atmospheric conditions, he adds, will be favorable to the spread of chol- era, and the digease will probably reach this country. The professor has given the minis try the benefit of the information, and has urged that pretautionary measures be adopted without delay. Documentary proof shovs that he informed the anthorities that the grip epidemic would extend over both con- tinents.

The Figaro, in an article on the New- foundland fishery dispute, declares {hat Lord Salisbury will not accept arbitration in the matter. The paper says that if France refuses to accept a pecuniary com- pensation for her present rights, Lord Sal- isbury wili repudiate the treaty of Utre cht and then open negotiations for a new treaty, giving the French to a Jarge extent the cod and lobster fishing grounds, and the colohists exclusive right.

Virst Stone Laid. Kryasron, June 19.

At one o’elock Sir John Macdonald and Sir Hector Langevin arrived here by special train to lay the first stone of the new dry dock. The Ministers were greeted by the civic reception committee, and escorted to Hotel Frontenac.
