NEW YORK, Sept. 22-The stock market swung back to a relatively even keel in the short trading. ses- sion Saturday. There was a little buying in the rail shares and a. few specialties, while other classifica- tion werc narrowly irregular.

KINGSVILLE, Sept. 22—A pound of chloroform was press into service to relieve Roy Coghilrs or- nery bear of his collar.

While chained in a backyard, the bears weight increased from 26 to 70 pounds during the Sum- mer without any change made in the collar.

Ths tight leather so mined the brain's disposition no one could appoach it. Finally the animal was enticed into a ‘crate, given the anaesthetic and the collar removed.

The Cakes 0f Yester-Year

There are two things that have convinced me that the passion for novelty for novelty's sake is a dan- ger to civilisation. If any man who died forty years ago could return to earth to- day, and were to enter a confec- tioners shop, what a change he would see, what a falling-oi‘! from the noble delights that once made the tea-table a feast not only for the palate. but for the imagination! Where are they gone, the cakes of yester-year? They have vanished, and their place has been taken by French trifles fit only for nlbbiers. Was it because the demand for them ceased? I do not believe it. The large-eyed gluttony of the young is not n. slave to the passion for novelty. Any normal child could have gone on eating the cakes of the eighties and nineties till the Day of Judgment. It is not. human beings, collectively" known as the public,’ who change.
