DISASTER AT BERNADINE

On sunday, december nineteenth, the residents of room 322 Bernadine ha!! were faced with disaster. The radiator within their room exploded sending both scalding hot water and chunks of ice into the room. The room was then quickly flooded with approxi- _ mately two inches of water. This also spread to the roomnext door as well as running down the wall into both rooms on the second and first floors below. Fortunately, due to people visiting the room, all personal belongings were quickly moved to safety and no damage occurred other than to the carpet.

For several days after this event, the two girls had to relocate to anotherroom. They have been fighting all week, to no avail, forrepairs to take place, and will continue to fight until they do. Thankfully, they have now been able to return to their room even though the damage has left a noticeable smell. Room 322 is their home, so when asked if they would change rooms their answer was no.

An interesting fact that came up from this incident is that of insurance. It is important that everyone living in residence realize that insurance is their own re- sponsibility. The university will not be responsible for any damage to personal property.

Thankful for help received from friends and cleaning staff, they are hoping that they will receive more attention so that their room may once again be com- pletely liveable.

UPEI HOSTS HOLLAND COLLEGE DEBATE

Tonight, January 30th, you’ll want to be in Main 040 at 8:00pm for the Annual UPEI/ Holland College Debate. The resolution for this year is ‘‘Be it re- solved that Canada should scrap its policy on bilin- gualism.”’

UPEI won a coin toss on CBC Radio, and decided to oppose the resolution, making them in favour of Canada’s English/French policy.

Over the past few years, Holland College has won the a trophy several times, but this year Mike and Julie : have decided to win it back. Mike said that he wants

brary. Last year, Mike and his partner Edward lost q by a hair. |

Mike Woodman has been debating for four years, and | is the president of the UPEI Debating Society. He | will be graduating this year and this will be his last —

chance to win back the cup. This isone ofthe rea- — sons he is so determined to win. :

Julie Theriault is in her first year at UPEI, but had some debating experience in Montreal -- in French. She also took part in the recent UPEI Invitational Debating tournament last November.

One of the members of the Holland College team is Kevin O’ Brian, who Mike has debated against before, Although Kevin’s team won last year, Mike is confi- dent that UPEI will triumph over Holland College anc Kevin O’ Brian this year.

Following the debate there will be a short reception iy the Faculty Lounge onthe firstfloorofthe Main | Building. So that’s tonight, Thursday, January 30th | at 8:00pm in room 040, the basement of Main Build-| ing.
