An Editor Relates the Story of Her Illne:s and How a Remarkable Change in Her Condition was Brought About.

For some five years the editor of this journal has made weekly visite to Brooklin in search of news. One of his earliest recollections of the village was in noting that Mise Levina Rodd was very ijl. Miss Redd was wel) known, and as week afier week rolled round, it was natural to ask how she was getting on, and the reply always came that she was no better. Time went on and it became a settled fact that Miss Rodd was a confirmed invalid and that euch sbe would continue untila kind Providence took mercy en her by allowing death to ead her sufferinge. None of the villagers anticipated any other ending. Our aston- ishmeot can be better imagired than des cribed, therefore, when Mis. Bert Wells hailed us one morning with “Well, editor, we have some news for you today.” ‘What is it ?” “Why, Miss nodd hae gone on a visit to O.« lumbus friends.” “Why, 1 thought she was acoufirmed invalid?” “So she was, but she has been improving so much lately that she is now able to help hereelf a good deal; and it was thought a charge of scene would do her good,” “That ie certainly news,,’ replied the quill-pushber, “and good news too; but what cured her ?” “Dr Williams Pink Pills,” replied Mrs, Wells. We then decided to ask Mies Rodd upon ber return for an interview; but it was some time before it took place, owing to the limited time at our disposal between trains, and partly owing to a desire to wait and see if the improvement was likely to prove permanent. However after many put-offs, we fivally called at the home Miss Doolittle, a si-ter of Miss Rodd’s,who has carefully cared for ber dur ing the long illness, At the request of the editor Miss Rodd made the following states ment: ‘I am fifty years of age and have lived in Brooklin ten years, Five years ago I was taken ij] with acute rheumatism and baye pot done a day’s work siice. The trouble began with my feet and the swelling extended to my arms, wrists aud shoulders, and finally settled in my neck. I had such pain that I was obliged to use a walking stick to eave me in moving about and two and a half years ago the stick had tomake way foracrutch. At this time I used to get up alittle each day, butit was not long before I was denied even this privilege, and the next six monthe I was perfectly helpless aod bed-ridden. I could not even turn my head or put a cup of teatomy mouth. 1| got completely dis- couraged after ineffictually being treated by two physicians and trying the different medicines recommended tor my ailment. While I was in thie belpless condition my niece came in one day and prevai ls ed upon me to try Dr, Williams’ Pink Pills. After taking two boxes I felta slight change for the better eo I continucd to take them, with the eff-ct that I covu- tinued to improve slowly ever since. I now sleep well, have a good appetite und have gained is fiesh. Ican stand now, walk about and even got in and out of the buggy upon the occasion of my late visit to Columbus. Siuce that time, too, I feel stronger and my reason for still using a crutch is en account of my knees being weak anda desire to not overtux my stren:th. The yelling mass below neared the walls. A whistle pierced the tumult. From the windows jetted swift lines of flame, and a shattering volley tore the air.

A crash, and then stillness on the mob, an intense hush, a swift paralysis; a blue gray smoke cloud floated up the walls and out over the jailyard. Men gasped, then held their breath. From their nests in the eaves startled spar- rows flew above the crowd with fright- ened twitterings.

In the jail corridor sounded the clink, clink of empty shells falling to the floor as nervous fingers fumbled at boxes or shoved fresh cartridges home with a snap snapping of breechblocks, while staring eyes were fixed upon the scene outside.

From below came a new sound, the noise of agony. On the outskirts of the crowd men were running. The mob surged back from the jail walls. In the space left clear lay prostrate forms out- stretched or huddled in attitudes of gro- tesque horror on the stone paved way. One figure half arose, wavered back- ward and then fell toward the retreat- ing mob with a gasping cry. Men run- ning back from the crowd with appre- hensive glances at the windows carried off the limp forms. In the crowd men bore up other men who reeled and stag- gered to and fro.

The corridor was very still. The guard stood in silence. Here and there one drew a long breath, with a slow heaving of the chest and a lifting of the shoulders, Turning their eyes with an effort from the mob, they glanced at each other as though seeking confirma- tion for their thoughts, to be assured that all this thing had happened, that the dark forms on the pavement below had been a grim reality. A slight, pale faced private threw his rifle to the floor and turned his face from the window, with a burst ef shuddering sobs. Others swore apparently at nothing and busied themselves with their weapons. No one paid any heed to the private who wept except that his next rank man stooped and picked up his rifle.
