Taxing THE Vert.—The Catholic Record of the [9th inst. contains an able and lengthy article, destriptive of ‘‘Taking the Veil” at Villa Marie, the Mother House of the Congre- gation De Notre Dame, Montreal. Among the twelve young postulants, three are recognized by the writer, Miss A. M. Pope, viz., Miss Chisholm, of Antigonish, Miss McInnis, of Summerside, and Miss Florence Eden, of Halifax. The last mentioned is daughter of Frank Eden, Esq., who is a native of our city.

Nvuisances.—His Honor the Stipendiary Magistrate had several cases of nuisance up before him this morning. He fined the offenders, and threatened that on a repetition of the offence he would make the fine $30 in each case. In the cases heard the offence consisted in piling manure in heaps within the city limits. We trust that the Magis- trate will punish all such offenders as they deserve. The health of citizens must not be allowed to be endangered through the care- jessness or igyorance of any pergan.

Gvysroro in Dancer.—A New Glasgow N. 8., lawyer has received a correspondence from a legal firm at Washington, D. C., re- lating to the claims of the heirs of one Hon. Col. Archibald Montgomery, who claims a tract of land situated on Chebucto harbor, County of Guysboro, comprising twenty thousand acres. The land was, it is said deeded to Montgomery by Gov. Wilmot, in 1764, but was lost sight of by the heirs until the present time. if the heirs push their «laini there will be some trouble, as part of the town of Guysboro is situated on the land.
A Nice Youne Man.—The New York Sun rints a sensational story concerning Harry hillips, John L. Sullivan's manager, which charges that Phillips is a burglar and that he organized a gang in Montreal to rob the vault of the Grand Trunk railway company and then went abroxd to escape the consequences. The Sun's informant is Frank Hayner, a private detective, who gives in detail the facts in connection with the organization of the ang of burglars in Montreal, he himself be- ag one of those selected by Phillips to do the work, he (Haynes) having formed Phillips acquaintance for the purpose of trapping him. ee

last Mr, C. A. MeNutt, of Kensington, a wel known horse and cattle dealer, shipped by the steamer St. Lawrence for J. A man & Co., Halifax, thirty-nine head of fat cattle, valued at $2,200, twenty pigs, $300, and two horses, $275. Three of the cattle in this con- sigument weighed 4625 lbs., and all were good. * * * Mr. John McDonald, of St. John, shipped to that city by the St. Lawrence on Saturday morning last, twenty cattle, avecaging in value $10 each, and twenty-one seep. Passinc Bogus Money. — An individual who resides within a few yards of the gouth- ern end of the line that divides Lot 47 from Lot 46, visited Suuris the other day and succeded in palming off upon a poor widow woman in change, for good money, a ten dol- lar Confederate bill. As soon as the fraud was detected, a messenger was sent after the cul- prit, and he succeeded in recovering the mouey. The guilty party, we understand, is stillat large. It is high time that sucha character was made to feel the extreme pen- alty of the law.

At Rollo Bay, on the 17th inst., after a brief illness of pneumonia, Lemuel Chaisson, Har- bor Master, aged 43 years, leaving a sorrowin widow and five children to mourn the loss at an affectionate husband and parent. Deceased was of a kind and genial disposition, and possessed many good qualities of both head and heart. Upright in his dealings, an oblig- ing neighbor, attentive to the sick and infirm his loss in the community will he severely felt, May hig soul regt in peace. .
At her late residence, Murray Harbor North, on the 26th April, 1888, Mrs. Mary Kennedy aged 78 years, For many years deceased had been delicate and at times had severe attacks, bat had enjoyed fair health dyring the peat winter till geized with pneumonia of the ungs, which terminated fatally. She was a very consistent christian, bore her afflictions patiently and even cheerfully, hada very kind and amiable nature and disposition, and was very highly respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. She was born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, and raised a large family, consisting of seven sons and five daughters, every one of whom liyeg tq mourn the loss of an affectionate mother. "oe

BE it enacted by the City Council of the City of ~* Charlottetown, as follows :—
1. The By-Law passed on the Nineteenth day of December last past, 1887, intituled “A By-Law to ameyd the By-Law to prevent Nuisances,” is hereby repealed.
2. Immediately after the publication of this By-Law, every sign or Other projection, fixed or hanging and projecting beyoud the line of any house, shop or other building to which the game is attached, and over any sidewalk or street of the +aid City, shall be removed and taken down by the owner thereof or by the owner of the pre- mises from which the same projects.
3. No person shall hereaiter place, fix or hang up any sign or other projection so that the same shall project over any sidewalk or street in the said city, or beyond the line of any house, shop or building to which the same ie at et,
4.
