I regretted having gwen the pledge, inasmuch as it compelled me t appear in opposition to that party with whom | have uniformly acted ~for, were I not restrained by my pledge, 1! should’ have cheerfully voted with the Majority; because I cannot deem that the cances sion made by the Assembly,and demanded — by the Lieut. Governor, in complhianee with his imperative instructions, oughite be put in comparison with the immenss advantages which will acerve to this Co. lony from the introduction of Res Government. It i¢ not necessary thatT should particularise these advantages on this occasion, a8 | have no doubt they are well understood by most of you, and as [ will have a better opportunity of @a- tering intoa full explanation of them, should that be required, at the time ofthe election. Suffice at to gay that, indepes- dently of the great privilege which the people now possess, under the truly Britioh system of Government conceded to thie Island, of controlling the adininistration of their own affairs—limperial revenues tothe amount of nearly two thousand pounds, hitherto beyond the controul of the Legislature, have been surrendered to the Colony.
