The war is having its natural effect in Caps Colony. Everything is at famine prices, and horsefiesh is at a premium.

Philip Kock, son of General Kock, who is @ prisoner in the hands of the British, says the Boers suffered most from the ‘soldiers in little clotbes, half men and half women,” meaning the Gordon High- landers, and inthe charge of the Fifth Lavcers. They say also that the two quick firing gans captured by the Devon- shire regiment are those that were taken from the Jameson raiders.

Schiel, a Germano officer aiding the Boers and captured by the British, a ~ surcd a correspondent that nothing could stano against the accuracy of the “British fleld guns, which repeatedly drove the Transvaal guoners from the embrasures. The British infantry fire was also a com plete surprise to the Boers, who were eonfident oftheir ability to master ary infantry atteck.

During the course of a reply relative to the arrangements made for the care of the wounded, Mr. Wyndman said in the House of Commons that there was ample stocks of medicines, etc., with all the British forces, but, possibly, if they were forced to care tor many Boers, the British re- sources would be strained, and the Gov- ernment was making provision for this contingency. Oa October 23rd,he added, three Boer doctors, with assistants, ar~ rived at Ladyemith, sna the Boer wound- ed were placed in the Dutch charge.
