Tue Canada Gazette contains the trans- actions of the Government Savings Banks of the Dominion for the month of Decem- ber liast (1892). Subjcined is a statement of the three principal Savings Banks for that period—-Halifax, St. John, Charlotte- town—together with Summersice :--

The Stanley.

Ir is pleasing to hear that the mails will now be carried by way of the Capes. Once the Stanley begins to stick in the ice aud run irregularly the carriage of the maile by hor is a fruitful cause of an- noyance and dissatisfaction to the people at large, ss well as of disapointment and loss to passengers. In view of the comparative severity of the winter, the Stanley has done wonderfully good work this year, We used to ascribe her success in former win- ter’s to the comparative mildness of the weather, Buc it cannot be said that this is « mild winter. Passengers the Stauley are enthusiastic in their praise of the vessel, her commander and his officers The performances of the Stanley are des- cribed as ** truly wonderful.” Captain Fin- layson has had his innate good judgment greatly fortified by his long experience in the winter navigation of the Strait. But not even Captain Finlayson in the Stanley can do impossibilitics ; and the passage of the heavy midwinter ice of the Strait by a steamer, however extraordinary her pow- ers, is impossible.

Hillsborough Bridge.

Ir ia whispered about town that Mr. H. C. Macdonald, M. P. P., will, in a short time, go to New York for the purpose cf promoting the construction of a bridge accross the Hillsborough River. The re- port comes from Government sources. It may not, therefore, be true. But every one will be pleased if it should be dis- covered that the Hon. gentleman is doing something in the interests of his con- stituents. A suggestion that Mr. Mac- donald has in view the transfer of the P. E. Island Railway to the C. P. R., and is operating for the purpose of foreatalling the excuse which the company may make that the river is too great an obstacle in the way of the extension of a railway line through his district to Murray Harbor is reasonable. But such a brilliant move as that smacks too much of the wide awake statesman to be made by any member or supporter of the present Government, If the bridge were built and if it could be utilized fur the purposes of a railway, the company would not probably hesitate to afford to the people of Belfast aud Murray Harbor the railway accommo- dation which they need. Will Mr. Me- Donald have the bridge built? We shall see.

—The Conservatives of Quebec have saved about a million and a quarter of dol- lars in the first year after their succession to Mercier and his grits. From 6} millions of dollars they have reduced the expendi- ture to 6} millions. "Twaseverthus. The Conservatives conserve, and the Liberals

—The North Sydney Herald protests against the sacrifice of the coal mines of Cape Breton to an American syndicate, and advises the people to organize and obtain the disal- jowance of the bill by the Governor-General. It says that ‘‘pay the royalty, Mr. Syndicate, and you may operate or close the mines as you choose, appears to be the character of the local government lease.”

—The St. John Telegraph denounces the

of the Maritime Provinces, and says : **The great trouble with the Maine people, and al-o with the people of Massachusetts, who are being displaced by Provincialists, seems to be that they are unwilling to work. For half a century most of the men in the fish- ing fleets of Gloucester have been from the Maritime Provinces, because they are bet- ter sailors and better fishermen than men who are natives of Massachusetts or Maine. The same is true of our lumbermen who are better axemen, better teamsters, and more reliable than the men of Maine. It looks as if the time might come when the sole use of a Yankee would be to swap jack- knives with his neighbor because the spirit of industry seems to be dyiog out among them. While some of our people may be induced by good wages to workin the Maine woods in winter it would be absurd to expect that they should remain in that state, which is the most unproductive in the union, being cursed by barren soil

and almost without resources. It is fortunate for the lumbermen of Maine and the owners of Gloces

The worst feature in the article, is the fact that a paper like the New York Herald, which has a wide circulation in the maritime provinces, should be willing to pub- lish such a tissue of falsehoods. We fear that some of the people who have thus been slan- dered, and who are readers of the Herald, will hereafter refuse to credit any statement they see in ita zolumns, and will judge its other utterances by this last scandalous production.”

—The report of the Governor of Alaska for the fiscal year 1892 shows that the ter- ritory is, on the whole, in a prosperous con- dition. The white population, according to the Governor's estimate, is 4,303, made

Considering its population, the trade ot Alaska is very large. Its imports last year amounted to $2,164,238, and its exports were valued at $7,759,094. The principal

items of export were 789,294 cases of salmon

valued at $3,157,176; 186,250 pounds of whalebone, $1,210,625; gold bullion,—

Alaska Commercial Company, $348,991;

1,220,000 codfish, $375,000; furs, curios,

etc., $351,000. There were exported from

Alaska last year $114,000 worth of oil and

guano. This oil was taken from herring,

which abound in Alaskan waters.

In the House of Commons yesterday, in reply to Mr. Davies Hon. Mr. Haggart said that the receipts of the P. E. I. Rail- way for the six months ending 3lat Decem- ber last were $92,073 and the expenditure $13), 381—a loss of $38,317. There had heen no expenditure on capital account, The receipts of the Intercolonial and its branches for the same period were $1,595,- 047 and expenses $1,597,757, a loss of $2,710. There had been expended $170,800 on capital account, of which $128,000 were for the Harris property, St. John, and $30,000 at Port Mulgrave. There was a sharp discussion on Mulock’s resolution to place binder twine on the free list. The matter wasdeferred at the re- quest of Hon, Mr. Foster,until the Gov- ernment brought down its measures. The rest of the day was taken up by considera- tion of supply. A.M. Burgess has been reinstated as Deputy Minister of Interivr.

In reply to Sir Richard Cartwright, Hon. Mr. Foster stated that the budget speech need not be looked fur next week. Mr. Welsh gives notice of a motion for the re- port of the surveys fur Weod Island break- water, P. E. I.

CRISP-CURRIE SCANDAL.

The Proceedings Private

FREDERRICTON, Feb. 2.

The Crisp Currie enquiry commenced yesterday. The proceedings were private, but it is known that the parties appeared without counsel. Rev. Mr. Howie is prosecutor and D. D. Currie ia chief wit- ness for the prosecution. The prosecution put in a number of letters, including seme from Dr. Gardner, now in New York, who attended in her illness the woman with whom Mr. Cfispor Mr. Currie is alleged to have had improper relations. There were also letters from Mr. Crisp to Rev. Mr. Dobson concerning certain correspoudence which had taken place between Dr. Gardner and Mr. Crisp. It is reported that Dr. Gardner, who now lives in New York, states that the woman made a con- fidant of him before the child was born, and that she gave him another name or other names than Currie’s on that occasion.

Races on Halifax Ice.

Hauirax, Feb 2. In the races on the ice yesterday, the 3 minute class was won by Curry’s Bessie’s Baby, and the 2.45 class was won by S. Caldwell’s Claude.

McShane Defeated.

Montreal, Feb. 2. In the civic elections yesterday Jas. Mc- Shane was defeated by Senator Desjardines, by 151 votes.
