About the only impression he made was when David knooked him down. He madequlte an impression in the dust. that is about. all we know of him. David lives yet, he is preaching yet. Where is Goliath? When he dropped there was nothing then but bigness and strength. and he went down in the dust and they hurled him. There have been pcoplewho have hndwenk bodies and strong souls who did mighty things and wrought lasting good. No man with a strong body and a weak soul ever did anything that lasted. It. it uh awiul mistake, though you deserve more credit than the man of wealth. No person can grow in grace and not grow in knowledge, but he may grow in knowledge and not in grace. If we say that growing in grace is high er then physical, or ﬁnancial, or intel- lectual growth, then we ought to put it in the proper place.You should put it in the ﬁrst place, for everything will be out of relation 1! you don't put it: in the ﬁrst. There was a lad went to the Princeton University. He went there with this determination; ﬁrst he said “I will care for my soul; I will guard carefully its growth and development in the sight of God. Secondly, I will care for my body, and thirdlyl will care for the‘. develop- ment: of my intellect and powers of mind". And thus he spent many years in Princeton. They said there. never was a man who left the mark for good in

Now growth in grace is not. only the highest. but ltis the slowest kind of growth. The higher we rise in the scale of life, the slowcrthe growth. A mush room comes in asingle night, because it is a mushroom; the oak tree takes a century, because ltls an oak tree. There are some insects that. are born, come to maturity, and dis inside of 54 hours. A very low form of life. Some animals takelen years to come to maturity. Physical man takes twenty years or more tacometomaturity. How long will it take splrituallmen to grow up into their possibilities, and the Bible never answers that question. “It doth not. yet appoin- what we shall be". Spiritually we start farthest from maturity, growth in grace is the slowest kind of growth we know anything about. and my friend, don't. get discouraged because God has not. rushed things in your soul,but->t.hink thislhave to live forever and God cannot allow] to rush a building that is never to be taken down. The buildings that. were rushed in San Francisco collapsed in a moment. but those that took time stood the tent. and my friend, there will ban test. on the building that you are erecting this morn— ing, and it will strike you much worse than the earthquake in San Franciso. better, until you develop into a Christian you are out of harmony with God's plan altogether. for regeneration does not mean struggling up to God, but; God com- ing down to poor sinners and making them right. in heart and life. Plant a seed in the earth and it can grow for a hundred years, but: it. has not changed its nature. If you are going to grow in grace the seed of grace must be in your heart, and it grows and develops, ilrst the blade, then the car, after that the full corn in the ear. Don't try to run counter to God's purpose. It. is God's purpose to make you o Chris- tian, and God never made a greater thing on earth than a. Christian. How wonder- iul to be a Christian, a Son 01 God, a child of heaven, and after that what is next? Now Job asks a very pertinent question. He says “Can the rush RX‘OW up without mire?“ A sensible person would say no, it. cannot grow without; mire. Can a Christian .urow without being . planted ? No, where! Those that are planted cd in the house of the Lord shall tlourlsh in the courts of our God. Now I am not going to say that it you plant a seed of grain in a ten acre ﬁeld it will not. grow, but! will say that it has ninety- ulna chances out of one hundred of grow- ing better in n lleid with a thousand more. A grain of wheat may grow out in a ﬁeld- by ltseli‘. but it. looks kind of selﬁsh, and when it is planted with a thousand more the others help to keep the soil moist, and it usmntobe in its proper place. I am: not going to say that you cannot be a Christian without being a member of the church, because that is not so; but you will not be the best. It is a good thing to get to heaven, butit is also a good thing to haven good time on the way, and God Intended the church to be a place where people would be planted and have. a good time on the way to glory. “The whole building ﬁlly framed together groweth an holy temple in the Lord."
