Poetry Contest

Deadline December 31

December 31 is the deadline for entering the American Poetry \ssociation’s contest. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to en- er.

The Grand Prize is $1,000 and the first prize is $500. In total 152 poets will win cash and publication prizes worth $11,000.

“Every student who writes poetry should enter this contest. Dur latest $1,000 winner is a student. Students also won 24 of the ther prizes, "said Robert Nelson, publisher for the association. ‘December Break should give students the chance to enter before he deadline.”

Poets may enter the contest by sending up the six poems, each © more than 20 lines, name and address on each page, to. Amer- tan Poetry Association, Dept. CT-90, 250—-A Potrero St., P.O. ox 1803, Santa Cruz, CA 96061. Entries should be mailed by De- ember 31. A new contest starts January 1. :

Each poem is also considered for publication in the American oetry Anthology, a leading collection of today’s poems.

During the eight years of sponsorship the American Poetry As-

ciation has run 34 contests and awarded $165,000 in prizes to 100 winning poets.

Dec. 7th — Thursday: If You Love This Planet

Dr. Helen Caldicott, of Physi- cians for Social Responsibility, uses a compelling and convincing mixture of reason and emotion to present an impressively mar- shalled array of facts about the devastating consequences of a nu- clear war. The effect is chilling.

“ Dr. Caldicott makes it clear, the situation is one of the utmost urgency: unless we make a con- certed effort to press for disar- mament, our chances of surviving until the end of the century are slim.

Dec. 8th — Friday: Killing Us Softly

The record of a slide-tape presentation by Jean Kilbourne, about the nature and-characteris- tics of images of women promul- gated by the advertising indus- try. In a humourous and spirited manner, she points out how these

ads are used to sell not only prod- ucts — but values, goals, concepts, and images of self as well.

Dec. 11th — Monday: Why Men Rape

An unusual documentary about rape. It is the assailant rather than the victim who tells the story of the crime.. Ten con- victed rapists tell their story. In- terviews with lawyers, men and women in a singles bar and mixed groups of teenagers bring out a number of issues related to sexual behavior and attitudes.

Dec. 12th — Tuesday: No Way, Not Me

This film is about women and poverty. Yes, it does happen in Canada. Rose-

mary Brown, the chair of the Women’s Studies Department at Simon Fraser University in Van- couver, British Columbia was in- volved with the making of the film. Rosemary is a peace ac- tivist /feminist /politician/writer

who has a long history with the women’s movement on the West Coast.

Dec. 18th — Mon- day: Augusta (16:33) Paradise (animated — 17:00)

Augusta, 88 years young lives in the Cariboo country of British Columbia. She.is the daughter of a Shuswap chief who lost her sta- tus as’an Indian when she mar- ried a white man in 1903. The portrait of a woman who, despite her advanced years, remains self— sufficient and dedicated to her people.

Paradise is an award-winning amnimated film. For relaxation and enjoyment ... not too heavy to carry home for Xmas.
