Wool Markets. strengthen

Information coming through to the P. E. 1. Sheep Breeders' As- sociation indicates a strengthen- ing in the markets for wool. In accordance with this information. the difference paid on wool com- ing to the receiving station at Charlottetown has been raised. In any event no matter what the ad- vance to patrons the full market value of the wool will be receiv- pd by those practicing co-opsr- atlvs marketing. It is interesting to note that in almost every year far the past thirty year period, the receipts from co-operative marketing have been substantial- 1y above that received from the open market. The Junior Farmera' Movement in P. B. I. is strengthening into Area organization. The St. George's ilislrict is an illustration. In this district there are four Junior i?armcrs' Groups namely. Junior 1:...-mers, Calf Club, Grain Club, and a sewing Club. A few eve- ningg ago a meeting was held comprising these groups in the St'ilODi at St. George's with an ex- .-rllcnt representation. As an ev- uicnre of the interest of the young people, some of the Calf Club members, none of which are over thirteen years of age, came in a distance of five miles and walked the distance home in order to attend a iudsimz elm "ml sen- :-ral meeting. Such a fine en- thusiastic interest is worthy of every support and in the General Meeting held on this occasion, an attempt was made to organize all the groups on a complete com- munity basis. Full assistance will he rendered in this respect and the development in the St. George's district will be watched with great interest.

Women's Institute Meetings

Women's Institute Conventions are now the order of the day. or possibly it would be more correct to say of the night. Many inter- esting meetings have been held and it is encouraging to note the fine interest taken in many of these conventions in matters per- talning to agricultural extension. The programs include addresses by special speakers and this along with the demonstrations provided by officials of the Women's Insti- iutc Department create a very hcneiicial influence in the various communities involved. It is sig- nificant to note that there is greater interest in this year's meetings in matters pertaining to practical agriculture and organiza- tional development in the life of the community. With an increas- od activity among farm women and farm youth. the problems of .i:i'i('lilillre in the days to come should be very easily solved.

Joint 111 In Foals

Navel ill or joint ill is an in- rnctious disease of new-born foals that is fatal in about 5095 or more of the cases. A large pro- portion of the foals that survive arl left with big joints. The dis- ease is common in all areas where horses are raised and the germs musing the infection are widely distributed. Generally the germs gain entrance through the navel cord at the time of birth. There is also a possibility that mares may infect the foal prior to birth.

The symptoms usually apptlar within 24 to 48 hours after in- fectlon has occurred. The sick foal refuses to suck and has a hiszh temperature. Sometimes death follows before other symptoms are noticed. ,However. the course of the disease is usually pro- longed. The animal is reluctant to move-joints become swollen. hot and painful. In later stages the swollen jointl may break and discharge pus. '

Prevention is the most satis- factory procedure. Strict barn sanitation is of extreme import- ance, especially on premises where there has been a history of a previous infection. The more should be placed in a clean pen ilrlor to fouling. Immediately af- ter foallng the navel card should

be disinfected with about 596 tinc- ture of Iodine or some other suit- able disinfectant. The cord sho d be treated twice each day unil it dries up and drops off. Treat- ment of the infected foal is not always satisfactory but if attend- ed to when symptoms are first observed the chances of recovery are greatly increased.

The Grandview Sewing Club held their Achievement Day on Tuesday. June 10. with a good at- tendance. In the first year work, Joan Giilis came first. Third year. senior class, Jean MacKensle, first; second. Jean MacPhee. In the In- termediate Class. third year. Mar- garet MacLeod first, Lona Scott. second and Shirley MacPhee. third. Their local leader was Mrs. W. Gillls.

On Thursday, June 12 Tryon Sewing Club held their Achieve- ment Day. In the first year work. Faye Csllbeck and Doris Mabev tied for first place. Second year, Junior class. Ruth Foye first. In- termediate, Janet I-Iowatt, first. Third year. Junior, ,Ellen sturdy; Intermediate Clsas, Mary Foye; Fourth ear. Mildred Howatt. first. Intermediate class. Fifth Year, Lorraine Leard, first. Intermed- iate class. Sixth Year, Burdens Roblee, first, Intermediate class.

On Wednesday, June 11, the 0'Leary Sewing Club held Achievement day. First year Jun- ior Class, Cynthia Kennedy. first; Intermediate class, Lilies MacGre- gor. first. Second year, Junior class. Georgia Yeo, first. Inter- mediate class, Claudette MacNcii. first.

These three Achievement Days were quite successful. The local leaders in O'Leary were Mrs. L. G. Dewar, Mrs. George MacDon- ald. Mrs. Marne Kennedy and Mrs. A. E. Wilson. The local leaders in Tryon Sewing Club for the past year. were Mrs. Spurgeon Clark. and Mrs. Walton Toombl.

A very fine achievement day was held on Wednesday. June 11, at the home of Mrs. Murdock MacGowan, Kllmulr, and was well attended by mothers and friends. The second year girls gave excel- lent demonstrations. The work of this club was held for display at the Women's Institute convention and winners will be announced later.

Club News

The first judging class in the season of the Freetown Calf Club was held at the home of club members David and Douglas Pro- fitt. Twelve club members took part. in the judging competition and did an excellent job in plac- ing at class of four cows. Follow- ing the judging. the members re- ceived instruction in the selection and feeding of a calf. Their next meeting will be held at the home of the club members Stewart and Thane Drumn.1on.d .on July 8th..

On Monday, June 9th, eighteen members of the "Abiteau" Hol- stein Shorthorn Calf Club met at the home of club member Barbara Smith. A class of mature Short- liorn cows was used for a judging demonstration and all members participated. After the demonstra- tion a short meeting was held and dlsns for the following two meetings were II.lld.Q.

The Sherbrooke Calf Club won a debate at Sherbrooke Hall on Friday. June 13th, from the Mal- peque Young People. The Sher- hrooke team opposing the resol- ution "Resoived that written agreements between father and son are necessary in farming". were Urban Lsughlin, Kathleen Dekker. and Clarence MacDonald. Supporting the resolution for Mai- peque were Theo Crozler, Ewen lieuetir, and Lorne Ramsay. The Judges were Chester S. MacDon- ald. from Summerside, Bill Cairns. Freetown. and Ed. MacGougan. of Malpeque. There was a good crowd in attendance. The program open- !d with films and a delicious lunch was served following the debate.

TRINITY MISSION CIRCLE - Trinity Mission Clrclc held its reg- uiar meeting in the Social Hall on Monday. The worship service open- ed the meeting and was led by Miss Mary MaoGregor. The busi- ness period, onduoted by the pres- ident. was f ilowed by a. discussion of the current business. A delic- ious lunch was then served by the committee in charge. The meeting closed with the repeating of the Lord's Prayer.

VISITED S. A. UNITS - Major M. M. Masher. C.W.A.C. Adviser, Eastern Command, Halifax. return- ed to that city this week after spending three days here. During her visit Maj. Mosher paid a visit to commanding officers of all units and also interviewed mem- bers of the O. W. A. 0. on strength here. she was also making ar- rangements for 0., W. A. Caledonia choir lit Beach drove inn

On Sunday afternoon. June iii, the members of Caledonia choir entertained the members of Beach cirove Inn with a service of sacred songs. The services was opened with the hymn "Sunlight". fol- lowed by many other well beloved numbers. To add to the pleasure of the audience, three duets, a solo and three trlos were sung.

Donnie and Jean Ann Munro sang two numbe 3. Their first number, "Have Thine Own Way Lord", was a delight to all, as was their second number, :- of Jesus."

Chester Martin and Margaret. Cameron sang "Must. I Go Empty- Handed". "Constantly Abiding" was sung by John, Sam, and Evie Lou Bears. The well known Brook- lyn Trio were heard in "I Will Sing The Wondrous Story" and "There's A Beautiful Land”, and Johnny Bears sang "The stranger of Galilee."

John Macxlnnon very capably presided at the piano. The clos- ing number, the hymn "God Be With You Till We Meet Again", brought the service to a close.

Mr. John Archie Campbell, in moving a vote of thanks to the choir, spoke of their kindness in coming so great a distance. and was warm in his praise for their thoughtful gesture.

In acknowledging the vote of thanks one of the choir members, speaking on behalf of the choir, said it gave them great pleasure to sing for the friends of the Inn, and the fact that every member who could come was present ver- lfied his statement.

Following the song service, the Brooklyn Trio were taken to the rooms of some -of those who were unable to come to the auditorium, where they cast rays of sunshine with their melodious voices.

The W. M. S. met at the home of Mira. Lorne MacMillan for its regular meeting, with .ten mem- bers present.

The Devotional period was closed by singing Hymn 15s. "Oh-'Master Let Me Walk With Thee."

Mrs. Colin Maciiiure, a. life long member, then gave a very inter- eating reading entitled "Life." The minutes of the last. meeting were read. The next roll call is to be answered with the word "Trust."

The Treasurer, Mrs. Chesley Hughes. then gave her report which showed dzttsz now on hand, Reserve Fund s12.12. Collection for the evening amounted to 53.40, Mrs. Hibbert Hughes kindly con- sented to take the Devotional part of the meeting for the next even- ing, which is to be held at the home of Mrs. ohesley Hughes.-The meet- ing closed with the Mispah Bene- diction and a dainty lunch was 39l'V9d by the hostess and a social hour enjoyed by all.

Graduates From ' Maclionaitl college

Hhown above is Mr. John Cut- cliffe who rccently graduated from Macdonald College of McGiil Uni- versity with the degree of B.Bc., (Agr.). Jack's parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Cutcllffe and sister Audrey of Fredericton, P.E.I., at- tended the graduation ceremonies at. McGiil on May 28, 1952. Jack is now employed by the Horti- culture Department of Macdonald College and plans to continue his studies to obtain a post.-graduate degree.

Fifteen members met at the home of Mrs. lilarle Skefflngton for the June meeting on the evening of the 5th. The vice-president conducted the meeting, which opened with singing "0 Canada," followed by the reading of the minutes and the roll call.

A discussion took place on the disposal of the hall organ. This faithful old musical instrument had graced .the stage for half a. century and provided music for many en- tertalnments. but had served its time, and must give place to some- thing more modern. Now (thanks to the Women's Institute) the tones of 8. beautiful piano ring out in llowe's Hail to add enjoyment to every gathering in the years to come.

The district convention was dis- cussed, and two delegates were ap- pointed to attend the annual con- vention.

The secretary - treasurer stated proceeds from variety concert were 544.92 and from auction club held during the winter 544.05. A cheque was also received from the musical festival.

Sick committee sent card and books to it sick child, and thanks were received from a bereaved family.

It was decided to "provide the usual treat of ice-cream sundaes for the pupils at their school clos- lug picnic. Mrs. Lowell Younker is to oversee same, Mrs. George Show to visit school in June. Miss Pear- don was asked to purchase the two prizes donated by the Institute for the pupils making most progress in arithmetic in junior and senior grades. The collection was 54.00. A contest by Mrs. Fred Hughes was won by Mrs. Edward Mccalium.

Mrs. Gregor Mccallum invited the meeting for July, roll call to be answered by passing in a card for the sick committee and Mrs. Walter McLure to be in charge of program.

The hostess and committee serv- ed a delicious lunch after which the meeting closed by singing the National Anthem.

Final Prformance By Wineloe Players

The final performance of Win- sloe's two one-not plays and spec- ialties was drawn to s. successful close last evening at their own hall at Wlnsloe Road. This was the thirteenth performance with these plays, and each was thor- oughly enjoyed.
