natural fish, fresh or on ice, and salmon and cys ters in cans; fruits and vegetables, fresh and dried, when pot canned, tinned, or bottled; gold and silver coin of the United States, and bullion; hay and straw for for- age, ice, india rubber and gutta percha goods; unplements, utensils and tovls for sgriculture; lime of all kinds, all materials and appliances for railways and tramways, paper of all kinds for printing and wrap- ping, photographic apparatua and chemi- cals, all accessories for printing, quick- ailver, resin, tar, pitch and turpentine, salt, sewing mrchines, shipbuilding mater- ials, including wire rope; starch of Indian corn or maize, steam and power engines, steam boilers and steam pipes, sulphur, tanbark, electrical apparatus and ap pliances of a'l kinds for communication or illumination, trees, plants, vines and seeds and grains of all kinds for propagation or cultivation, wire for fences, proprietary medicines.’
Jamaica is, in addition to this, ‘‘io ad- mit coal free of duty, to reduce by one half the resent duty on bacon and bacon hams, bread and biscuit, butter, cheese, lard and its compounds; lumber of pitch pine, in rough or prepared for buildings, to be reduced to nine shillings per 1,000 per cent, the duty on beef, salted or pickled, oats; petroleum
feet. Jamaica is also to reduce by 25 corn or maiz3, cornmeal and its products, crude or refined; pork, salted or piekled; wheat.”
It will readily be seen that discrimination against all these articles would give the United States such an advantage that our West Indian export But Great

trade would speedily be lost. Britain would not, itis said, consent to a treaty which would operate so injuriously in respect to her colonies. And shall we consent to a treaty of Unrestricted Reci- procity between Canada and the United States which would, admittedly, involve a heavy discrimination against the commerce of Great Britain

A few days ago the Guardian contained
a statement concerning the Finance Com- mittee of the City Council, which the Fi- nance Committee authorized Tuk EXAMINRR to say was uotrue. The Guardian persist- ing that its statement waa correct and insisting that THe EXAMINER was refpon- sible for accusing it of falsehood, Tue Ex- \MINER at once clearly and emphatieally repudiated the idea of editorial responsibil- ity in the matter. This ought to have been a sutlicient explanation, and the Guardian ought to have sought satisfaction from the Finance Committee—not from Tur Exam INER. But it seems that the Finance Com- mittee were right in their denial of the Guardian's charge that they had withheld certain accounts of last year and carried them over into this year. Yct the Guardian
has not ** withdrawn ” or ** cxplained ;” but it has added to its «ffence in respect to the Finance Committee,
the false accusation of ** pervarication”’ on the part of Tue Examiner In addition to this it made an untrue and misleading statement in respect to the costs in the (Jueen's County election case. This un- true and misleading statement it has not withdrawn and refuses to correct on the ground forsocth that Tue Examiner has been ** uncharitable and insolent” in res- pect to it;and now it says that ‘* THe EXAMINER is becoming & most unreliable and misleading paper.” The Guardian should net let a bad temper and a false portion blurr its judgment. THe Ex AMINER has neither prevaricated in respect to it, nor has ic been uncharitable—uniess it be uncharitable to correct a few of its faults and blunders; nor has it been un- reliable or misleading” in respect to any f the points in between the two papers. If the Guardian desires to be re garded as a truthful and religious organ it must not palter with thetruth,and it muat be ready to correct its mistakes and show a more Christian-like spirit.

HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY.
The introductory chapters give the his tory of the country from 1759 to the time when Sir John first appeared upon the scene; an account of the political par- ties that at various times controlled its destiny, and the characters cf the men who were his contemporaries, the burning questions which had agitated ths pub he mind and furn'shed the battle cries at the polis, and the great and almoat over whelming difficulties which had to be over- come, The story of his private life, down to his first electioa to the House of Assem- bly in 1854, has been lirgely contributed hy the author’s mother, who still lives in Kingston, and is first cousin and sister-in- law to the late Premier, and by other rela- tives; It consists cf an account of his birth in Scotland, removal to Canada, his school days, his law etudies and practice at the bar, election as alderman, ete. From 1844 the work deals only with his political life, and may be said to be a very thororgh and complete history of Canada. It covers every incident of importance, gives an ex haustive «ccount of every prominent qucs- tion which bas occupied public attention in the last forty-seven years, traces to their source the principles which to-day animate the Conservative party, gives the history of Protection, Confedirition, and trade relations with our neighbors, and biogra- phical sketches of our leading statesmen and ef cur Gevernors-General With the ** Double Shuffle” and the ‘* Pacific Rail- way Scandal” the author has dealt at length, and his statement of facts, backed by public papers and documents, seem so clear and straightforward that even the most sceptical must be conviaced. The whole work is, as might be expected, in accord with the author’s announced inten- tion of endeavoring to make clear the wis- dom of Sir John’s policy and the purity of his motives. But while such justice has been done to the career of the old chieftain as could only be done by one in the posi- tion of the author, it has been done in such a way that none of his opponents cau find cause of cff-nce. We feel safe in say- ing that the work wili have an immense sale «mong all loyal followers of Canada’s greatest Premier, and wll be read with interest hy numbers of his wupponents.

Considerable space is devoted to an ac- count of the desth of the Hon. George Brown and there is given the greater part of the tributes paid by the Hon. Oliver Mowatt and the Hon. G. W. Allan on the occasion of the unveiling of the statu: erected to his memory in Queen's Park, Toronto: Mr. Mowat's speech commenc- ed as [ello vg :
** Mr. Brown is the first public man in Ontario in whose memory a statue has ever been erected. Of our public men who have passed away, not one had more friends than he had, and I venture to say that not one was more generally lamented. Those who incurned his death asa personal and public calamity were to be found in every part of the Dominion, and amongst Cana- dians of all clesses and all creeds. The place selected for erecting his statue is, with the approval of all parties, the park of the University—an institution in whose ef- ficiency and prosperity he had, all his Jif, taken a most lively interest. The springs of action which governed bis life, are, to a very great extent, to be found in his early training and associations, He received his education in Edinburgh, he left Scotland and came to America with hia father and his father’s family while yet a youth, and two-thirds of his hfe were passed here. By psrental example and early teaching he was, in religion, a strong Protestant and an earnest Presbyterian, and in polit- ics a Liberal and a Loyalist. (Applaus: ) The studies and observations of his mature years confirmed in him the principles in which he had been educated; and all his hfe he steod by those principles.
** All his life he loved his Queen and the grand old islands of the sea over which she has reigned so longand eo happily. All his hfe he loved British connection and British institutiens; and all his life he did his duty in maintaining Jike sentiments wherever his influence extended. He was proud of his British nationality, and was in no haste to discover, and had no disposition to assume, that the time was near when the interests of Canada required the sever- ing of our political relations to the old land; but he, at the same time, recognized a supreme duty to be owing to the Jand of his domicile, and was always zealous iv promoting whatever in his judgment was for the true and permanent good of Can- ada. Nor had any loyal British subject, anywhere, a kinder and mre appreciative feeling than he had towards the great American Republic on our borders, or to- wards its energetic and progressive people.

Ramsdell was scribe and gave the hand of fellowship, Prof. Hincks, of Andover, gave the sermon ou the occasion, and the charge to the pas- tor was from Rev. C. E. Jefferson. The choir furnished an excellent programme, The congregation was the largest seen in the church for years, Mr. Taylor was for- merly a student at Prirce of Wales Col- lege, but received his seminary training at Boston University and Andover.
