Just prior to the mid-term break, WUSC (World Uni- versity Service of Canada) held its second organizational meeting. Held in the econom-

ics lounge on 4th floor Main,-

it was attended by. 12 people.

The two main topics of the meeting were the election of officers and discussion of a referendum to be held in conjunction with the up- coming Student Union elec- tions.

The elected officers are Joe Byrne President, Leo Cheverie-Secretary, lan Hogg -Treasurer, Sheila Liaison officer and Professor Ralph Hazleton will remain as faculty advisor.

The real discussion of the meeting was over whether or not to hold a referendum on a $r student fee levy. The money raised would be used to fund a refugee student studying at U.P.E.I.

Questions arose over the need for a referendum at all. A number of members felt it would .be unnecessary if the Student Council was willing to support the measure on its’ own, and there is a fear of losing the referendum.

There was full agreement that a presentation should be made to Council in any case. However, members wanting

only praise for Dorsey and the Student Council, who he said, “have gone out of their way to help” two refugee students already on campus.

The WUSC members finally agreed that while they could possibly lose the re-

ferendum, the support and'

overall encouragement that could be garnered from the student body would be very

helpful to WUSC in the long run.

The next WUSC meeting will be held March 7th at 6:30 pm. in the economics lounge on fourth floor main, and all are invited to attend. Those wishing to help on the referendum campaign should contact Sheila Lund or Michael Zinck.

Bosnitch fingered in RCMP investigation

FREDERICTON (CUP) - Officers from the city’s fraud division seized at least two boxes from University of New Brunswick student council offices as they began investigating the financial dealings of the former stu- dent council president.

John Bosnitch was brought to RCMP headquarters for question Feb. 14, with loans made by student council to the Federation of Youth at the centre of the investigation.

The colourful and con- troversial Bosnitch, who resigned over UNB student politics for two and a half years before his recent defeat at the polls, denies there were any_:financial irregular.- ities during his term, and said he is co-operating fully with police.

Bosnitch says university president James Downey — with whom he had had a long running fued — is at least partially responsible for the investigation.

He says the administration has a “political vendetta” against him, and the investi- gation is the latest display of “step-by-step harassment of student leaders on campus.”

Downey denied any con- nection to the seizure and reiterated his often stated suggestion that Bosnitch grow up.

The inquiry was prompted by an anonymous complaint from within the current student union, which Bosnitch

I WUSC projects,

World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is a non- governmental, non-profit organization whose pur- pose is contributing to the socio-economic develop- ment of all countries of the Third World.

WUSC programs can be separated in terms of direct contributions to the Third World, for example its volunteer, teaching pro- grams throughout Africa, Asia and South America, and the various Canadian programs oriented toward development education for

l Canadian students.

The historical foundation of WUSC has been student based local committees on University and College cam- puses across Canada. At present, there are forty-two such Committees in Canada.

Their purpose is to sup- port WUSC local, national and overseas programs by participating in a variety of activities. They sponsor stu- dent refugees, conduct Canadian sales of han- dicrafts from developing countries, raise funds for organize development education programs and assists with promotion and recruitment for WUSC's overseas pro- grams.

Bosnitch said he welcomed the police inquiry because it would put an end to‘the “epidemic of rumours” that surrounds his time in office and will stop the “heresy” from the university admini— stration.

No charges have been laid, though police recently re-

turned to seize more files ,

from student council offices, and also seized' documents relating to the investigation from the local Canada Man- power office and the univer- sity lawyer’s office.

Edward Island has had a long association with WUSC. A WUSC local com- mittee was active at St. Dunstan's University for many years. During the 1970's the cOmmittee was dermant, but in the fall of 1984, a local committee was again established and certified by the National Board of Directors of WUSC.

As its first major project, our local committee would like to participate in a major national WUSC program of supporting United Nations refugees to attend universi- ty at U.P.E.I.

The WUSC refugee pro- gram is a well-established one and has been operating in Canada for the past 30 years. The WUSC local com- mittees act as support groups and raise funds to provide accommodations, food, clothing and tuition for the students for a period of one year. On the basis of a special agreement bet- ween WUSC and the Federal Department of Manpower and Immigration the refugees studying in Canada are granted landed immigrant status which enables them to work and apply for student loans and scholarships.

“WUSC gets referendum

local‘committees, are study- ing in Canada.

It is the wish of our WUSC local committee to establish a permanent fund to sup- port United Nations refugees by having all students contribute $2.00 each year to a fund which would be used exclusively for the support of a first year refugee student at U.P.E.I. This fund will be augmented by WUSC local committee fund-raising ac- tivities.

Through the process of a referendum. we would like to give a;‘ students at U.P.E.I. the choice of whether to support this program or not.

A petition has collected the signatures of 350 students. We request Coun- cil to approve a referendum to be run in conjunction with the student elections of March 13th.

The referendum proposal is as follows:

0 That the Student Union increase the Student Union fees by an amount of $2.00 per student per year. The additional fee will be used to establish a permanent fund to support United Nations refugees attending U.P.E.I. The fund will be ad- ministered by the WUSC Local Committee.
