Here’s what’s new at CIMN as we close out the Fall broadcast season.

NEW VOLUNTEERS:

If you’re interested in getting involved in CIMN, NOW (today, this minute, don’t delay) is the time to do it. Many prospective volunteers were disappointed last September, when they waited too long to apply and thus lost the chance at the specific spot on air they were hoping for. This is NOT to say that there is only one time to volunteer. CIMN always loves to see your cheer- ful, shining faces, and there is always a need for more people. Just be aware that ifthere is a spot on air that you have your heart set on, chances are that it won’t be there if you wait. DON’T DELAY! APPLY TODAY!!

NEW MANAGEMENT:

Everyone will miss Colin James Cheverie, who has been our music director for almost two years, and is now leaving us for the glow of the big city lights. Colin has contributed enor- mously to CIMN, and we’re glad that he has. Thanks for everything! Thanks also to Sandy MacLure, who has been filling in as Spoken Word Director, and then advertising manager on interim, while our management structure underwent a few months’ worth of changes. Sandy will be staying on as part of the CIMN team, which is now running at full capacity, because (fanfare, please!) all of our manage- ment is now in place. Allow me to introduce them.

STATION MANAGER: Rory ‘‘Lucky’’ O’ Connor. The Big Kahuna, and manager of all he surveys, Rory has been the taskmaster of CIMN since April ’93. He is known to all volunteers as ‘‘that Irish dude’’.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR: Danielle ‘‘Dragon Lady’’ Christensen. In charge of all program- ming and volunteer relations, Danielle has been ““P.D.”? since January ’93. Another face you already know.

MUSIC DIRECTOR: Derek ‘‘Surf’s Up’’ Klapka. New to the Island and the management, this Science major and windsurfing aficionado 1S now the person to talk to for everything you €ver wanted to know about music. ADVERTISING MANAGER: Phil ‘‘The

Hacker’’ Bushell. No, he doesn’t have hairballs or a smoker’s cough, but he does have a mean way with a computer, and a briefcase full of advertising ideas. If you have anything to ad- vertise, talk to Phil.

SPOKEN WORD DIRECTOR: Jason ‘‘Yak Man’’ Oraniuk. Another science major rounds out the management in this very important position. Jason’s in charge of bringing you the news and information about your campus. He also adores volunteers, and has promised to buy them as much pizza as they can eat ifthey come and put together a good talk show.

So that’s the team heading up operations at CIMN, The Island’s Only Alternative. (And a darn fun bunch they are, too.)

SO WHERE DO YOU FIT IN?

Well, if you are already working at CIMN, you know where you fit in. If you have any questions ever, or something extra to contrib- ute, talk to some management types.

If you are part of a campus organization, you should be telling us what your organization is doing. We’ll be making it more and more easy for you to do that in the next few weeks. We can set up a special spot on air devoted exclusively to your concerns, and there are a number of ways in which this can be done. STAMP OUT STUDENT APATHY! INFORM YOUR AU- DIENCE!

Tune in!! There are many ways to tune in to CIMN. 1) Residents of Marian and Bernardine Halls can tune their dials to 700 AM. 2) Resi- dents of Blanchard Hall, and people living anywhere else on the Island served by cable can tune to 104.5 fm. if you’re not hooked up yet, call Island Cable. It'll cost you $2.50 to get the necessaries. 3) Anytime you’re on campus, you can hear us in the Pit. The volume dial for the speakers is located next to the student union desk, under the big Panther Lounge sign. This is NEVER to be turned off. Your student fees are going to support this station. Don’t waste them. Ifthe volume is too loud, perhaps after the lunch hour crowd has left and there are only a dozen people in the Pit, you can turn it down a few notches. ‘‘2’’ on the dial is usually good for a background volume. You are also welcome to turn it up as the noise level in the Pit rises. The bottom line is: GET WIRED to CIMN!

SO WHO or WHAT is CIMN???

We’re a campus/community alternative radio station, devoted to bringing you up-to-the- minute news and information about UPEI, as well as the greatest music you can hear, ina range of styles to suit every taste. Some people

have many questions about what is included under the banner ‘‘alternative music’’. Many people have a lot of misconceptions about it. F’rinstance, I heard a person comment once that she was sitting under our speaker in the Pit, and heard a long, drawn-out primal scream coming over the airwaves. She was immediately told by another student ‘‘Well, yeah. That’s alternative music.’’ Please don’t write off the entire broad- cast week of the station because one tune wasn’t to your taste. I’d bet twenty to one that the next song played after that primal-screaming piece was a love song on the harp with a vocal accompaniment. What is meant by alternative music? It means everything under the sun other than the commercial pap that’s pushed by the American record giants. That doesn’t mean that you’ ll never have heard of the artists played at CIMN- on the contrary! Have you ever heard of the Barenaked Ladies, Moxy Fruvous, Red Hot Chili Peppers, ‘‘Weird Al’’ Yankovic, Leonard Cohen, The Pogues, Sarah McLachlan, Paul Bernard, Blind Melon, Pearl Jam, Daniel Lanois, the Arrogant Worms, and Loreena McKennitt? These are just a few of the hundreds of artists you could only hear on CIMN for months, even years before commercial radio started toying with them. That’s probably the only drawback to working in or listening to alternative radio-- you hear things when they are fresh and new, listen to them for years, and then get really frustrated when people around you start discov- ering things for the first time two years later. Worse things could happen. Anyway, what our DJ’s are told is ‘‘Play whatever style of music you want to, by whatever artist you want to.”’ If it’s an album that has hit the Top 40, play something else off the album other than the single cut(s) that got commercial play.’’ Obvi- ously, if it’s a quality album, the other songs other than the single(s) will be as good, if not better. And, if they’re not, why the %*%*&* would you bother giving air time to a crummy artist? ‘That’s the major difference between alternative radio and the mainstream: we push an artist because it’s quality (or really turns the particular DJ’s crank). Mainstream radio keeps pushing an artist because the record companies want that artist pushed. Come on...Milli Vanilli got all that airplay for their singing talent? Egg- zactly. On CIMN, there are shows playing grunge, dance, classical, jazz, hard rock, soft rock, folk, Irish national, all-Canadian, all-PEI, rap, rave, acid, house...you name it, you’ve got it. And of course, our fabulous request line is always open, at 892-CIMN. (yes,-we know that’s really hard to remember.)

SUMMARY: (Don’t you love it when your textbooks do this? You never have to actually read the chapter...)
