They said some immigrants had attempted to bring potatoes in with them and a vigilant watch was being maintained on all imported potatoes.

European potatoes have been ex- cluded by Canada chiefly because of a ' disease called olden nematode. .

Dr. Norman Putnam, field crop commissioner. said spread of the disease in Canada would ruin Can- ada's potato export trade to the United sum and South America' which is worth more than 02,000,000.

Effects of the disease on the po- tato crop would be similar to that of foot-and-mouth disease on cat- tle. he said.

CORPUS OHIRISTI. Tom, May 10 - (AP) - An oil fire, which for a time threatened a large residential area within a mile of the down- town distrlct, was reported under control late tonight.
