Peess Men Comine.—A Toronto de- spatch of the 19th inst. says; About forty members of the Ontario Press Association left this morning on a trip to the Lower Provinces. Among the places to be visited are St. John, Fredericton, P. E. Island and Quebec.

Tue Tobacco Cror.—Advices from Cuba are to the effect that the tobacco crop on the island will be a failure this year. This is due to early spring rains and generally backward weather. In consequence of this information a raise in the price of Havana tobacco is looked for.

Supreme Courr.—Up to Saturday even- ing, when the Court at Georgetown ad- journed until Monday, but one case had vecupied the Court, and it was not ended then: Thig js the mowing machine case between Patteraon Bros., Ontario, and Malcolm Mathewson, of Dundas. There are several trials to come off at this sitting of the Court-—one an alleged breach of promise case, one of alleged forgery, one of alleged intent to kill, and others of ‘minor import- ance. It appears there is more work than usual to do at the present term. It is thought the jury will have to spand another week in the shire town of King’s,

Port-au-Prince advices, dated July 7, say: Port-au-Prince within the last few days has been in a state bordering on frenzy. Hippolyte has assaulted the ex- treme outworks, but was held in check. Legitime is pressing into the ranks every man capable of carrying a rifle. The people have been delirious with excitement. The minister of war has executed some of the prisoners with his own hands. Hippolyte is burning farm houses and villages in sight of the city. All foreigners have been threateued with extermination, but the United States naval force on hand is ready to take the city if necessary. A British cruiser and two Spanish cruisers also are in the harbor prepared to protect their citizens. A system of signals has been es- tablished with the American consulate, and

if one Englishmen is touched he will shell the city. Among the Icebergs. Reports by all the ocean steamers agree as to the continued prevalence of icebergs in the Straits of Belle. Isle, although the

| passage is getting gradualiy clearer and;

the bergs are being carried into the Atlan- tic. The Beaver liner, Lake Huron, on her last outward trip from Montreal to Liverpool, appears to have fallen in with an immense tield of icebergs, which was watched for two whole days with much in- terest by the passengers. No less than forty-two were counted at one time, all within a radius of ten miles. One of these sighted 170 miles east of Belle Isle, was declared by the captain and officers to be the largest they had ever seen. Its length was estimated at 1,000 feet, and stood some 250 feet out of water. It was about two miles distant from the ship.

Distributing $900,000. A HOWL OF INDIGNATION HEARD AT JOHNS- TOWN,

A Johnstown, Pa., despatch of the 19th says : Judge Cummin and Wm. R. Thomp- son, of the state relief commission, arrived here from Cresson Springs at 10 o'clock this morning. These gentlemen immedi- ately opened their office for the payment of the $500,000 of the governor's fund, and $400,000 of the Pittsburg relief committee's fund. Abaut one hundred applicants, mostly of the poorer classes, were in wait- ing. As the warrants were issued and the amounts handed out, after being sworn to by the applicants, there was one grand howl of indignation and disappointment at the small amounts awarded. To illustrate: The well-known Chas. S. Dick, one of Johnstown’s most prominent citizens, lost $5,000 by the fluod. Dick filed a claim for $3,000. His warrant was filled out for $80. Dick was angry and refused to accept the amountawarded. A neighbor of Dick’s whose losaes were Much greater, also re- ceived a warrant for $80.

About Horses. The Agricuturist reports that Mr. Geo. E. Hughes, of the Apothecaries’ Hall, Charlottetown, has purchased from Mp. Samuel Hall, New Village, the three year old mare Miss Hall, by Hernando, 2891, dam Emma, by All Right, 5817. Miss Hall isa very handsome young mare, and is standard and registered in Vol. VII. W. A. T. R. The price paid was $350. Mr. Hughes took her to Charlottetown on Saturday morning.

Tue Usvat Resutr.—On Friday last Albert Lawrence, a clerk in a hardware store at Branttord, Ont., snapped a revol- ver to show Fred Cox that it worked all right. The revolver exploded and Cox was killed. Lawrence gave himself up but was liberated. He thought the revolver was empty.

Lonvon, July 19.—At the labor congress yesterday, American, English, Belgian, Spanish, French, Danish, Polish, Austro- Hungarian and Portugese delegates agreed upon @ series of resolutions declaring in favor of eight hours as the maximum day, a weekly holiday, suppression of labor for children under 14 years, and equal oppor- tunities and wages for the two sexes.

New York, July 19.—It is stated that the sugar trust is preparing to make a vig- orous battle to sustain the present prices if not to force them still higher. Previous to the first advance a year ago storage of large quantities of refined sugar was unheard of. The prices of granulated sugar at retail was then about 6} cents and is now 10 cents, and hundreds of thousands of barrels are said to be stored up in ware- houses.

Bremincuam, Ala., July 19.—A feud be tween the Simpson and Houghton families in the western part of this county led to a fight this morning. Two of the Houghtons were kilied and several of the other party wounded. The Simpsons were then atiack- ed by the officers and the deputy sheriff killed; also one of the Simpsons. The officers retired, and more bloodshed is feared. Five of the Houghtons and three of the Simpsons have been killed and many others wounded since the feud began three years ago.

Humor has been defined in a variety of ways, and of all the significations we have ever come across, says the Hartford Herald, the one that strikes us as truest and hap- piest is this: “‘Humor is wit touched by love.”

The}Maoris of New Zealand, while at war with the English, invariably sent a notice when they were going to make an attack as if they were coming on a friendly visit and desired things to be ready forthem. They thought it very strange that the English did not give them similar notice.

Great Britain built the first iron war vessel, the Dover, a small side-wheel steam. er, in 1839. It was followed by the Albert, ‘Soudan, and Wilberforce, all of small size. ‘In 1843 three war steamers averaging 850 tons were launched, and during the next three years thirty-four iron steamers of all sizes were built.

Diep From His Insurtes.—The Agri- ‘culturist says that on Tuesday last, while 'Mr. Patrick Keough, of Albany, Lot 27, was returning from Lord’s Mills, Tryon, _with a load of boards, through some acci- dent the boards slipped back, and Mr. Keough was thrown tothe ground. One wheel of the truck passed over the lower part of his body, causing paralysis, which ended in death on Thursday evening. Mr. Keough was not found until some time after the unfortunate accident, when every- thing possible was done for him, but with- out avail. He was conscious to the end. After Mr. Keough fell from the truck, the horse went on, and was found some time after grazing beside the read.
