The fifth of the Ten Command. ments makes the demand “Honour tl1y father and thy mother." to which is added the promise “that thv days maybe long upon the land trliich the Lord thy God giveth tlicc" but there is a question quite gcn- eral in the minds of those con- nected with juvenile and other courts handling this type of case as to whether numerous homes arc proving svorthy of this mosaic stan- dard.

Our papers are faithfully re- flecting the problem of an in- creasing juvenile trend in dclin- qiiency. In a public park of Can- adian city. a sixtcen-year-old girl and a iiiale companion. not much older. were arrested for acting in a disorderly manner. The girl asked the city police for a cigarette. When the couple appeared in court the presiding Magistrate scored the girl's request thus:

"A girl your age should certain- ly not be smoking. It is a shame that you would even think of light- ing a cigarette. I am surprised that you can even buy them in the stores."

The usual tax or jail sentence was imposed on‘ both.

Recently in another Canadian city four juveniles undertook to loot. a freight train loaded with banamas. Two of the gang had appeared in the juvenile court just the week previous.

There is a Sudbury. Ontario, Magistrate who would like to pun. ish parents who allow their cl1ll- drcn to walk the streets all hours of the night. He. flayed the par- ents of a tcn-year-old boy who committed a theft every day in one yveck.

One American lad of ten years showed signs of a. movie training. He wcnt into a candy store kept by an eltlcrly woman, and bought some candy. and when he’ got the old dame looking for a, spider on the floor. he struck her on the back of the neck with a poker. and grabbing a handful of candy he ran out.

Such incidents galore indicate something seriously wrong with the homes of the nation. The na- ture and number of such incidents indicate that the pnrcnt§ affect. ed cannot themselves escape a cer- tain measure of the responsibility and that all too frequently thcrc is something glaringly wrong with the home life. as a result of which it has lost the right to speak help- fullv and with authority to its children.

There can be no harsher court than the tribunal of self-judg- incnt whcn it sits in age upon the errors and omissions of the years.

I11 a way. each of us gets the old age he deserves. And when I write that I am not thinking of material rewards, but of those consolations that no man can steal from another.

For just as the bee gathers honey against winter. so we. too, fill the storehouse of our futures with the trash or treasure of our choice.

For when the heat of the day is passed and evening is come. we shall draw .upon whatever we have garnered through the years.

Then whoever has stored his heart. and brain with sweet and noble things, with charities and daily kiiidnesscs, and whoever has drunk dccp of the beauty of the world. Will know a deep content and fulfilment.

But what of those who have nothing but a memory of a mar. ket-placc? They will be empty in the evening of their day. For in old age. beyond the minimum of needs, there is but one want. The old desire to be loved.

To be old and unwanted -- and who has not seen this tragedy?- is not always a sad commentary upon the young and vigorous.

For. as one poet says. "Human love needs human mcriting". We are loved as we deserve to be loved.

When Browning wrote that the

best is yet to be. he wrote as a [man who loved to the full.

No man can do more than that.

Aiid no man doing that need shrink from the hand of Time. For Time can touch lightly and

the dreaded contact may become at. the end a benediction from which none need shrink.

MR. GEORGE E. HORNE DIES IN REGINA

Ardent supporter and attendant of the First Baptist Church.Geor1:e Edward Horne. father of Mrs. D.M. Rudell, secretary to the superin- tendent of the Canadian Pacific Railways in Regina. died Tuesday at his home. 1853 Robinson street, Jan. 13th. 1937.

Mr. Home. who was well known in the city. was born at Wliisloe. P.E.I. He. was 81 years old when he dlcd. His wife died in May, 1926. the year he retired from his drnying business which he estab- lished following his arrival to the city in 1906.

Besides his daughter he is sur- vived by one son. Lionel. employed in the Department of Agriculture of the Provincial Government; a sister. Mrs. Jesse Page of Minnea- polis; a brother. Charles B. of 0y. ster Bed Bridge. P.E.I.t a niece. Mrs. (‘worge C. Curtis. 2101 Retal- lack Strcct. Regina. and a grand- daughter. Mrs. H. S. McCoy, 3524 Victoria Avenue. also survive. Funeral services was held at I o'clock Friday afternoon from Spears Baptist Church. Rev. Bow- ley Green of the First Baptist (‘iiurch officiated and interment

On Thursday evening Decem- bcr 31st. 1936. a large gathering of relatives and friends from Churchill and surrounding dis- tricts assembled at the spacious homc of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan MacGilvray to honor this grand old couple being the fifty-sixth anniversary of their marriage.

After all the guests had as- sembled, Mr. John A. MacKinnon acted as chairman and in a few well chosen words explained the object of the gathering. He tl1c11 called upon Mr. Andrew MacFndyen to read an address while Messrs. Lemuel Lamont and Gordon Mac. Kinnon presented Mr. and Mrs. MacGilvray with two beautiful leather covered arm-chairs and a well-filled purse.

Mr. MacGilyTay on behalf of Mrs. MacGilvray in his usual man- ner thanked all for their kind re- mcmbrancc.

Short speeches were made by Mr. Angus MacPhec, M.L.A.. and several others who were present.

A delicious lii11cl1 was then scrv- ed by the Churchill ladies in their usual charming manner.

The remainder of the evening was spent. in, social conversation. old time songs and dancing.

In the wee sma’ hours of the New Year all wendcd their way homeward after wishing Mr. and MHIIGUVPRY a Happy New Year.

Dear Friends and neighbours. A goodly number of your numerous friends and neighbours have met. here this evening in your benuti. ful and acconiodoiis home for the express purpose of tendering you both. our most hearty congratiila. tins on your reaching the fifty- sixth anniversary of your marri. age; this is certainly an auspicious event in the life of any married couple as it is only on very rare occasions that both parties to the marriage contract are spared to reach the fifty-sixth anniversary of the same.

Mr. and Mrs. MacGilvrav have both lived their lives in Churchill and we all realize that they have been blessed in a special manner by the Supreme Ruler of the Uni- verse.

Mr. MacGilvray has been doing business with the public for a per. lod of- some sixty years as a black. smith, learning his trade with the late Ronald MacDonald of Bi'ook- field in this position we must all admit he gave good satisfaction to the public.

We have always found Mr. Mac. Gllvray ready 11nd Willing to help along with anything that was for the good of the community; and also the first one to raise his voice and put his foot down solid on any- thing he considered to be 11cm. mental to the wolfarc of the com. munity in which he lived.

Mr. and Mrs. MacGilvray are now over the four score mark and we believe that they can truly say that. they have not an enemy in Churchill or vicinity; and this is certainly a great record. after dealing for over sixty» years with the general public.

I must now bring this rambling address to a close as we don't w-ant to give this couple mo much

praise. as it. might cause them to cease from their well doing, and before closing we want m say that we are all very glad to find Mr.

President of the Can- adian Pacific Railway. discussed the situation with Labor Minister Rogers hcre today. There was 11o announcement following the c011- fererice.

Refusal of the railway running trade employees to accept the ma- jority report of the MaicLcan Con- ciliation Board which recommend. ed restoration of part of the 10 per ccnt wage cut was reported to have been discussed by the President and the Minister.

Scouters Club and Akela Club. They decided to have the first meeting of the Akels. Club on Saturday at 4 p. m. at wlroh time we hope to see all the Cub Leaders and their Assistants. The Scoutcrs decided to meet on Sunday at 4 p.m. and of oour~e all the Scoutmasters and their Assist- ants will be there.
