Tlie trees of St. James’, London, and of Versailles, and the Tuilleries, Paris, as of Kelvin Grove, Glasgow, and Phcenix Park, Dublin, are like their lordly cities, magnificent, whilst to come nearer home the trees in Central Park, New York, and on the Common of Boston, are not unworthy of notice. In passing throvgh the glades of ‘‘merrie England,” the green vales of Erin, and the struths of bonnie Scotland, the traveller is often struck by the sudden ap- pearance of some grand old castle ruin, interlaced and overtoppled by the ivy green, rearing its grey head amid a group of forest giants, which remain to fling forth their ponderous arms to the blue expanse, the winds playing and the birds singing in their branches melodies of praise to the ever-enduring Creator, whilst the gallant knights and ladies gay, who joyously rode beneath, have all leng passed into the silent land, and are only remembered by the flattering inscriptions upon the costly mausoleums which cover their crumbiing ashes.

Besides the varieties of expensive and beautiful wood used in the manufacture of furniture, such as walnut, mahogany, ebony, rosewood, etc., the usefulness in trees is chiefly to be noted in respect to their adaptation, not only for fuel but for building—horse and ship building. A\l- though stone and bricks have, to a great extent, superseded the total use of wood in house building, yet, on this Island, where the former commodities are to most unat- tainable, wood must be depended on as the prime means of shelter, both for man and beast. In respect to shipbuilding, iron is’ fast taking the place of wood all the world over; but it is a question whether the highly wrought steel of the steam frigate will ever accomplish what did the rough and somewhat unsymmetrical wooden walls of our forefathers. We must not forget that of Hispania’s trees were framed the vessels which brought civilization to our Western world, and bore the standard of the cross, with its message of peace, to the haunts of bloodshed and woe. We must not forget

that of English forest trees were built the tiny craft which, with the help of Heaven, shattered the huge Armada, and prevented England from becoming a province of

Spain.

The Grit candt- date, after sponding his resources upon Gritism, was made a cat’s-paw of, and knowing this, the electors refused to give a wire-pulling Grit clique in Charlottetown the opportunity of using them in like man- ner. I might also point to the Advertiser, which served them to good advantage. If rumor speaks correctly, they treated it in characteristic style. The simple truth, in my opinion, is that the men who constitute the Grit party on this Island would sacrifice Edward Blake himself if he were a Romana Catholic. With such examples as these before their eyes, we presume the ‘'atholics of this Proviece should be slow to cast their lot on that side. Land Sales in the Northwest.

The Montreal Witness has seen a priuted report of the Canada Northwest Land Com- pany which was seut out from England in advance of last Friday's meeting. The sales of farm lands for the year, the Hi itness says, have been 4,335 acres, realizing £4,060, deducting from which £2,449, original cost of lands, leaves £1,610 profit. The report says this falling off is due to the rebellion. One singular item is £6,694 for directors’ fees and salaries. This item alone amounts to more than the sale of the lands. The directors’ fees in Canada alone amount to £3,617.
